Fifty years in chains
In Fifty years of chain by Charles Ball he said, “My grandfather was brought from Africa and sold as a slave in Calvert County, in Maryland. I never understood the name of the ship in which he was imported, nor the name of the planter who bought him on his arrival, but at the time I knew him he was a slave in a family called Maud, who resided near Leonardtown.” (p.3)During old times there was a system of slavery toward the African American people known as the black people. This situation was extreme cruelty and oppression. The system of slavery brought poverty, destruction and separation from family and fear in the community; these were some difficulties that Charles Ball experience as salve. He had to cope with poverty by working very hard, he run away from slavery to see his family again and he had to obey to cope with fear. Charles ball experienced poverty during the time he was a salve, and he cope that situation by working very hard and obey. When Charles was around twelve years old his master Jack Cox died, so he had a new master. His new master was old man that was very severe with him. “As I was always very obedient, and ready to execute all his orders, I did not receive much whipping, but suffered greatly for want of sufficient and proper food. My master allowed his slaves a peck of corn, each, per week, throughout the year; and this we had to grind into meal in a hand-mill for ourselves.” (p.9) He had to work very hard to have food and he had to obey, so he can get a food. This old master just gave to the salves the necessary supplies and almost no benefits like the other master. They have little meat for a short time, but the good thing is that they lived near the Patuxent and the Chesapeake Bay rivers they have a lot of fish. He had to survive with very little food, they don’t received enough vitamins and nutrients, that’s the cause why very little amount of salves survive. Slaves suffer a lot of poverty because
