Essay On Algebra Is Not Necessary
The question “Is Algebra Necessary” has an answer that only the Department of Education can tell us. Different people will say different things, a failing high school student would most likely say that Algebra doesn’t help in life, but a genius Physics professor would say that we have to learn it. Many people have different opinions and I have my own opinion on the matter. I think that Algebra is not necessary for some students, but for others it is necessary. If so many are failing maybe we shouldn’t make it mandatory to be taught to all students. If we continue the way we are going the American dream will be to fail in math. I believe we need to change America’s entire education system to benefit students in the future. Our government is worried and upset about having some lowest test scores compared to other countries. So our government forces us to take certain classes and programs to be able to graduate high school. America is afraid of changing. We as a country should not worry about what other countries think about us; we need to focus on our own country, states and students. I think that we should teach our students the same way we have been up till the eighth grade. Then the freshman students’ should be able to choose classes that they think will help out in …show more content…
I think that we need to change the way we teach our children, if we do not want to be embarrassed of being the stupidest country in the world. The American dream is on the borderline of being a nightmare. We must let our students make the decision of what they want to do in life ,and then we must help educate them with the right classes to get them where they are meant to be. Algebra is not for everyone and there is no reason to teach someone algebra if they won’t need it. But algebra is for some students who desire toward a math profession, and we will need to give them those classes for them to succeed in

In Andrew Hacker's “ Is Algebra Necessary?” he talks about the mathematics education system taught to students. Mr. Hacker says too much pressure is placed on students to excel at a high level of algebra. In fact, California's two university systems only consider applicants who have taken three years of mathematics. In addition, many community colleges and Ivy Leagues look for a score of seven-hundred on the math section of the SAT. Only 9 percent of men and 3 percent of women attained that score in 2009. I agree with the author that too much pressure is placed on students to get a high grade in a subject they will not use in everyday life. When colleges exclude applicants who get less than a 700 on the math portion of the SAT, they do not give applicants who are amazing in history or art a chance to have a better education.…

The discussion of education in America is one of the most important topics that our nation faces today. America’s economic future and ability to compete with the rest of the world depends on having a highly educated populace and well trained workforce. Our education system has had its problems but I feel that over time with the right elected officials, we can turn around and rank in the top ten to compete globally.…

The current, test based, American Educational system fails to instill in student a desire for life- long learning and does not prepare them to be well rounded and successful adults. A change in educational philosophy needs to be made in this country before it is to late. Educations is what defines a person life and without a proper education, people wont be able to go anywhere in life. Students usually study for their test and forget what they studied the next day. After school all students want to do is get away from their work and not have to do it anymore. There is not necessarily a perfect educational system, but it could be better than what we have now. People are not going where they are supposed to after schooling. There is a book, That Used To Be Us by Thomas L. Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum, which can prove this.…

In “Is Algebra Necessary?” by Andrew Hacker, an emeritus professor of political science at Queens College, City University of New York , Hacker critiques algebra, claiming that students are not passing, and that this is limiting the level of education available to them . Hacker suggests that if we make math more practical, by adding things such as “citizen statistics,” more students will succeed. In the beginning of his essay Hacker provides evidence many American students, from high school to college, are expected to fail their algebra classes. The author then makes the point that pressing students to take, and pass, math courses prevents some from discovering their own talents. Hacker suggests that algebra can cause students of all backgrounds to struggle, even when talented in other areas of academics. Hacker clarifies that the negative effects of math requirements occur in both high school and college level students, he makes this point by claiming that many universities expect a certain number of high school math courses for entrance, and require students to take math once in attendance. Hacker then argues that passing math alone is not good enough, claiming that many colleges look for high math SAT scores that are only achieved by a very small percentage of the population, making it difficult to be accepted into colleges. He then mentions that math in the classroom does not always apply to real world jobs, where much training is done specifically for the job after hiring. He then admits that people need basic math skills, but most workers will not need algebra or above. He further asserts that without math, the world as we know it would not exist, and that math is needed in this “statistical age.” Next Hacker clarifies that even when math is not related to a person’s field of study, it is sometimes still required to make a schools curriculum look impressive. Finally he…

Have you ever felt like you or your child is not getting a proper education? Are you a student who has below average grades and yet still manages to pass your class? Have you ever wondered why the U.S has gone from 18th in math to 31st? The answer to these questions, and many more that people have been posing is quite simple. Our education has just simply gotten worse. Many people today in society believe our education has gotten worse, though some believe that it is up to standards. I believe that our education has actually gotten worse, because the quality of our education has been going down, our performance has been going down, and our standardized tests are a mess.…

The Educational system in America has been subject to many reforms in the past century, and despite many theories; none have been successful in creating a world-class public school system that America needs to stay on the leading edge of advancement. A mixture of low standards, a transition to equity, and lack of discipline has led to the poor excuse of an educational system we all know today. The costs and consequences of these problems are getting even greater, however, there are examples to be followed and changes that can be made to turn this catastrophe around.…

Our educational system in America is highly inefficient. It focuses more on standardized testing than it does on helping the students understand the curriculum. I have seen teachers that care more about their paycheck than the well-being of their own students. On top of all this, once you're out of high school, there is college. Of course, it is not required for you to attend. But it's almost impossible to get a well paying job without a degree. To make matters worse, college is unbelievably expensive, making it nearly impossible to go without putting yourself in debt, because the average cost for tuition for a public college in America is $9,139. For example, my own mother almost didn’t pass high school, because her government teacher always put her down and how she was going to fail. My mom was never able to get a college level education because her parents could not afford to give her that privilege.…

The American education system has been on a gradual decline over the past several years and has become very non competitive to other nations across the world. This is quite surprising considering the fact that America has one of the most developed and strongest economies in the world yet is so far behind other countries in the education matter. One of the most recent debated issues in the U.S. Department of Education, is the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act signed by former President George W. Bush. According to many education intellects, this act is holding America back from achieving its full potential and getting back on track with the rest of the world. Diane Ravitch, who is a historian of American education, addresses this issue in “Time to Kill ‘No Child Left Behind.’” She says, “Congress should get rid of…

There are many things wrong with the current public school system, specifically the secondary schools. The destructive environment of the secondary school system is turning young adults away from academics. Progress is quivering as trivial social matters in the high school arena rear their ugly heads. This system needs to be updated. It needs to be changed to fit the modern world, changed to allow the United States to start making positive progress in academic excellence once…

On the other hand, the Common Core Standards are intended to do just that, which in my opinion do not benefit our students. The Common Core Standards were created for standardized tests that are not accurate in analyzing students’ knowledge. I believe with the Common Core Standards, teachers are only teaching what the students need to know to graduate high school. By doing this, students are not able to take the skills acquired and apply it to everyday life. A change should definitely be implemented with the Common Core Standards. The standards ought to be significantly parallel to the NCSS and Mississippi Social Studies…

Every student should receive an individualized education and that should be the end goal. However, instead of going down the route that every student should receive an individualized education then attempt to give every student the same education and educational opportunities is wrong. Every student in America is not going to receive the same opportunities. Not every family is wealthy or in poverty and not every family lives in the perfect mixture of urban and rural schooling systems. It should not be shamed that students are receiving executive elite schooling, parents want what is best for their child and there is nothing wrong with that. Granted it should be shamed that a child is receiving a poor education based on a poverty leveled school. The route that the education field needs to go down is individualism all the way through. Kids should be receiving an individualized education based on who they are as humans, not where they come from or what type of schooling they want to go to. If by ninth grade a child still does not like science, that kid should not have to continuously take science courses. Children should be able to explore what they want, if America wants passionate, hard workers, then America needs to let the students be passionate about something. Rural schools and urban schools are different and nothing is going to make them the same, but how we respond to it can change. Urban schools have lots of real world opportunities for children and half of the schools do not even take advantage of that because they are too busy meeting state and national standards. The truth is, the standards are there to give everyone the same educational opportunities and to promote an individualized education. Yet, the standards hinder students from doing just that. There should be a set of standards that teachers need to follow, otherwise there is anarchy. However, the standards should be a…

In school, we are taught math from the time we start school until the day we graduate. Almost every subject, besides English, has some sort of math involved. As time goes on the math becomes harder and harder to prepare students for life outside of school. One of the main types of math that is heavily taught in high school is Algebra. In fact, it is a requirement for California high school graduates. By learning these math skills in school, it helps students for their daily life and in their later professions.…

The public school system in America has failed many people in our society. The money given to support education is at an all-time high. Many bad teachers are protected by powerful unions and these bad teachers could care less about low test scores. Students could accomplish anything, but instead bad teachers are causing many students to drop out. Lower test scores could be replaced with high test scores if bad teachers were fired. There is some hope for many Black and Latino students if they could find a way out of the public school system to charter schools that could help them graduate and prepare for college success.…

Education is essential for the advancement in nearly every aspect of life. Without the opportunity to learn there is no opportunity for change. America’s education system is subpar in its ability to provide the right types of opportunity to its students and their individual needs due to its widespread use of the common core system. This system requires all schools across the nation to generalize education and instill the same basic curricular upon every student. Although this does provide equal opportunity for students to achieve the same amount of success, it is too generalized to meet the individual’s future interests, teaches students to memorize instead of understand, and punishes students who may lack in one area but excel in others. the…
