Jim Crow laws were law that segregated people like me from white people. We were not able to drink from the same water fountain as the white people, go to the same bathroom as the white people, and go to the same school as the white people. Basically every part of everyday life was separated between the white and blacks. I don’t want my children to feel belittled because of what the government pushes for. I want them to know their worth and that they are just as important as the opposite race.
I have heard of how life up in the North was and I wanted that. I wanted less of the uptight lifestyle I was living in. Because it was a time of war, young men were drafted into the war without choice, leaving industrial jobs out of workers. This means that my family and I can take these positions. There was another advantage as well for the African Americans living in the south. There was word that because of the scare of traitors, industrial owners refused to hire Europeans, leaving even more spots open for hiring.
