The Start of National Negro Week started in 1926 when it was sponsored the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASLAH), an organization founded by Carter G Woodson a Harvard trained Historian and a prominent minister Jessie E Mooreland in 1915. ASALH's official mission is "to promote, research, preserve, interpret, and disseminate information about Black life, history, and culture to the global community." Growing up I have only learned about African Americans that was key figures in the civil rights movement. First famous African American Frederick Douglass who was self-educated author and lecturer. Harriet Tubman an abolitionist writer who championed women’s rights and uplifting of African Americans. Martin Luther King a pivotal civil rights leader who lead protest against segregation.
