Independence and Adulthood I was nourished with love from my umbilical cord in my mother’s warm womb, spoon fed when I was able to feed and hand held when I could walk; I was akin to my parents from my conception, as I was their child. But, soon I was riding a bicycle by myself while my father stood and watch, I was placed on the school bus by myself while my mother waved me goodbye, in less than a year, my parents together will send me off to school by myself. From a tender age, still being a mere child, my parents have engraved the nature of independence in me, a key quality of maturity. An essential proponent of the transition to adulthood is obtaining true independence.
Pure independence comes in various forms; obtaining a paying job, going to university or buying a home, these are what complete independence is made of and what each child should dream of. An adult, while they may need assistance at times, should be able to support themselves. An adult, while they may not have all the answers, should be able to provide information for themselves. An adult, while they may not be sure, should be able to make decisions for themselves. Adulthood is intertwined with individualism and self-reliance and learning how to be independent is the mark of adulthood.
I have successfully passed each benchmark that proves that I am independent and now, applying to college, I am at the test and on the cusps of adulthood. I went on the school bus on my own, I study for each exam on my own and now, I will be attending college on my own. My parents can only hold their hands out and hope I fall into them if I trip, but I must be able to pick myself as an adult. I am soon to be a complete, decision-making adult and my mark of adulthood would be going to college after I graduate, which is my decision, and mine alone. I will become an
