Part of the reason I want to pursue chiropractic is because, unlike other professions in the medical field, I would have to opportunity to converse with my patients on a personal level.
For two years I have worked in a restaurant filling the role as a hostess and waitress for Famous Dave’s. Along with this, for over a year I have worked as a Resident Assistant (RA) in college housing for my sophomore and junior years of school. Thanks to these job experiences, I have learned how to communicate with a wide range of people and connect with individuals. One of the tough lessons I have learned in life is that not everyone is going to be positive or even kind. Most of the time though, people will come out of their shell and let down their defenses when they realize someone cares. Like an RA, chiropractors often end up filling that compassionate role in their practice. I want to be the authentic person who not only helps heal the physical aspect, but supports their emotional health as
well.
My goal in life is to take what I have learned from my academic experiences and apply them to my future education. Hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn will aid in acquiring skills necessary to become a successful chiropractor. Current educational achievements prove that this work ethic will be applied while advancing my education. In particular, my educational background in Pre-Medicine and Biology have laid a foundation for my studies as a student of chiropractic. I have always had a fascination with science, and a drive to need to know exactly why and how systems function. Pursuing chiropractic will allow me get to see how one system affects the other when misalignment of the body causes interference. This is why I believe this profession best suits my personality because I do not only look at what is happening on the surface, I also get to delve deeper into issues.
Volunteer experiences such as, tutoring at an elementary school and coordinating senior dances at a local senior center, along with my current job title as a Resident Assistant have helped establish strong communication skills. These developed skills will be necessary for patient/doctor communication. Shadowing a chiropractor this past spring, and taking into account my own experiences as a patient, have both proven to me that being a good healthcare provider relies on good patient communication. Because of this, I know I will fit in well with the Palmer environment because of the philosophy that chiropractic medicine is about genuine caring and providing healing for individuals.
