set the tone as to how the Europeans would see and act in the new land. In his writing, the passage that helped determine how the Europeans would act with the inhabitants of New World would be the one to pick. The passage that can show this is, “I gave them a thousand good, pleasing things which I had brought, in order that they might be fond of us, and furthermore might be made Christians and be inclined to the love and service of their Highnesses and of the whole Castilian nation, and try to help us and to give us of the things which they have in abundance and which are necessary to us” (Perkins 28). There are many reasons to pick this passage. It shows a complete view of the New World on dealing with the New World, and it shows a misunderstanding that he and others would have. It shows how to deal with the New World by showing that the Natives are easily able to be manipulated, turning the natives into a pool of future Christians, making them more subjects for the Crown, and the wealth and land that is being taken. The misunderstanding that is shown in this passage would show up too. Both the misunderstanding of the New World and dealing with the New World go together, and would plague both points far into the future. The way that this passage would relate to the history of the new world would be the same for why it was chosen in the first place as the top passage.
As one current writer say, “Columbus' efforts initiated the period of encounter between Europeans and Native Americans” (Grammer). The importance lies not only in what the person wrote down, but also when the person wrote it, and who would be receiving it first. The first person to receive a writing can dictate how widely dispersed and meaningful it is. The people that would receive these writings were the King and Queen of Spain. Upon attaining it they could use that passage for their advantage. After they received it, they could use this passage to justify for the sending of priests, bringing “civilization” to the land and its people, and showing that the people had more than enough resources to go around. If a small clerk or shopkeeper were the one to have received the message, then people now would not be writing or talking in the same way since the impact would have been less. This would also be the first news of the new world that anyone would be getting, setting expectations in the minds of the peoples of what the land and the people are like. This is ultimately where the misunderstanding would come
along.
The literary impact of this letter can be understated by what is shown. He likely did not know that he was even making a literary impact through his misunderstanding of the people. This passage would not be the only example of misunderstanding in his writing. It would show up multiple times. With his misunderstanding of the native it would have an impact on the many letters or books that were made of the new world. One author would tackle this misunderstanding so people would see issue he would be St. John de Crevecoeur in his work “Letters of an American Farmer”. He would make it a point to show that misunderstandings is happening when new groups meet for the first time by actively showing it when Andrew and the Natives meet for the first time. It would take many more authors and others type of people to show that both side need to stop this and start to understand who they are. If not people would be attack like in Samuel de Champlain writing. Since both Columbus and de Champlain showed to authors like de Crevecoeur how dangerous misunderstanding each other is. Columbus impact in the end was it made people like de Crevecoeur write to fix this by showing the misunderstanding clearly so everyone saw this was happening so it would end one day. Once Columbus wrote down his words, much of the world would be forever changed since the only thing that could stop what came after him was what he wrote of the New World. What began with Christopher Columbus’s writing would now set the attitude of the Europeans towards the New World for the centuries to come. With the idea of how to deal with the New World would also come in the misunderstanding that plagued it for years to come. People would fight with their words his writing but in the end it would take a long time before anything was to change. Hopefully in the future people will take more time in what they write since it may set the attitude of the world on how to deal with new thing and misunderstanding could have deadly impacts on people.
