When working in a career field that exposes their employees to stressful situations, it is inevitable that during their time in the field that they will see or go through something traumatic while on the job. This applies to any EMS provider; every day they encounter people in times of need. However, sometimes we can not help these people and this is when critical incident debriefing comes into play. Critical incident debriefing is a supportive crisis intervention group, that is composed of a small group of your peers. CIDS began to have growing support in the 1970’s when state and federal legislation was passed to provide resources and services to those who were traumatized either emotionally or mentally by a critical incident. Being physically and emotionally healthy is a requirement to being a EMS provider, and CISD works to maintain the emotional well being of employees. The research clearly shows that critical incident debriefing in beneficial to people who have experienced a traumatic event. Also, it is vastly different than going to see a physiatrist, because it is based on group therapy where all the people there have been affected by the same traumatic event. This allows the program to be more welcoming, because you realize that you are not the only one feeling the affects of this event. I believe that knowing you aren’t alone in feeling this way is a major stress reliever because you now know that there are people you can talk to about this. Along with reducing stress and depression in the people that go, CISD is said to increase cooperation within the team which has been traumatized. This is very important because team work is vital to EMS personnel. Overall, I believe that CISD is very important to the well being of individuals who have experienced a traumatic

Medical jargon is often misconstrued and difficult to follow for common folk, however, in emergency situations, miscommunication can be the difference between life and death. During the 1970s, a series of catastrophic wildfires in California revealed how flawed our emergency medical services were. Lack of communication between urgent care providers and other responders resulted in millions of dollars in property damage and a high death toll. This event facilitated the government and other agencies to create a multijurisdictional system that would increase organization and reduce confusion in future calamities. Implementing this system has drastically improved communication in emergency medical care and the transition between organizations.…

Along with that, we would continue to make sure that responders are approaching these situations in a way that will minimize risk. The idea of training EMTs and Paramedics in tactical positions has been around since the 1980s. There have been a number of law enforcement agencies nationally that have worked with tactical EMTs already. Many of these teams use Counter Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support(CONTOMS), to certify their providers as EMT-Ts or SWAT Medics. Furthermore, there are several national agencies, such as the International Association of Fire Chiefs that have recommended the concept of a rescue task force (RTF). With this concept, highly specialized and trained paramedics would travel behind law enforcement as they clear areas. Victims would be rapidly extracted back out to a safe zone for further treatment. In Blacksburg, Virginia, the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad has such a system. With their system, medics and law enforcement are provided with ballistic protection as a precaution against any threats that may be in the warm zone. Each team is comprised of two medics and two law enforcement officers. During the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, their squad was instrumental in the life-saving and recovery of several…

Reviewing patient reports would spark debate and provide better ideas on how to properly document encounters with patients from a legal standpoint. Patient report reviews would also provide some insight into what areas members may need improvement and train upon. The changes I’ve stated above This paper is written from the viewpoint of me being a newly promoted EMS Chief. I can measure the success of this change by seeing better outcomes regarding patient care. Are EMS reports complete with the proper patient care rendered from a legal standpoint? Do department members have a better understanding of protocols and why they were implemented? If the answers to these questions are yes, then my changes have been…

Sometimes it is something that we can predict. Other times the crisis happens upon us suddenly and without warning. In departments such as the Emergency Department (ED), crisis can generally be expected and the ED staff can safely believe that there will be a crisis during their shift. The outcome of the crisis can depend on how it is approached and dealt with. A patient’s rapid deterioration of their state of health or arrest in front of the family is a common crisis situation that occurs where I work. This puts the staff as well as the patient and patient’s family in crisis mode. I feel that my job as the patient’s nurse is to make sure that the situation flows as efficiently as possible. Crisis communication needs to be initiated immediately. My verbal and nonverbal communication can affect the situation. I also need to pick up on the verbal and nonverbal cues of the family. It is also important to collaborate with the team, listen to both staff and families and communicate in a professional manor. Active listening is a prominent quality of a leader, along with how they lead the team. A positive approach is always best while maintaining clear and concise communication. There are times when it is necessary to use assertive communication. This is true when dealing with a difficult person, staff or family member. The nurse needs to be a leader, professional and assertive in order to…

EMS workers are especially inclined to be subject to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Exposure to stressful situations, for which they have little or no training on how to deal with emotional stress, place these workers at a very high risk for chronic stress, critical incident stress, and PTSD. This connection will be further examined by relating PTSD to EMS workers, coping with PTSD, and resources which should be made in place, but are not yet generally available to most workers.…

Inside the organization there will be many people working together as a team to be sure that things are progressing as information is coming in. This will be for all crisis situations not only this one in particular. This will be our “go to team” for all emergency situations. This team will consist of individuals that have undergone training in CPR, emergency situations, and also stress management. According to Foote (2012)” Leaders should quickly assess the type of crisis, the help they need to shape their response, the status of information available, and the potential scope of damage”. This is not only for their benefit, but also for the safety of the other employees. These employees will be notified immediately of when situations are occurring and will already know course of action to take in certain emergency situations such as fires, flooding, and intruders inside the premises. During all other situations each person of the team will be notified of their duties, where to report, what…

I enjoyed reading your post about core competencies. I must say that the approach through your incident report system is a great tool for healthcare professionals to reduce errors and improve patient safety. Patient safety is an essential and vital component of quality care. Yet health care providers face many challenges in today’s health care environment in trying to keep patients safe (Ballard, 2003). When this occurs, it our job to voice our concerns on what needs to be done and where to start. Hospital errors are a seemingly intractable problem and continuing threat to public health. Errors resist intervention because too often the interventions deployed fail to address the fundamental source of errors: weak organizational safety culture…
