No one really knows how Poe really died all they have are theories. People believe that it was rabies that did it and some say it was alcohol. He liked to drink, maybe just a little too much. His death is a mystery, no one really knows what happened. Reasoning no one knows what really happened evidence show its was because he drank a lot, there was already alcohol in his system, and he gave up on a lot after he started drinking. Edgar Allen Poe seemed to drink a lot. Evidence to that would be all his recovery letters and promises to his wife and her mother explaining that he would reform from alcohol( Pollin, Benedetto). Poe was seen by Joseph Walker, a printer, at Gunner's Hall tavern in Baltimore. Therefor Poe did not reform from drinking …show more content…
“Poe may have become too drunk to care about protecting himself against the wind and rain”(Silverman). That shows Edgar didn’t care about his own health because of alcohol. Poe was also poorly dressed. He seemed like he didn’t care how he looked probably due to alcohol. “ He wore neither vest nor tie, his dingy trousers fit badly, his shirt was crumpled, his cheap hat soiled”(Silverman). So that explains that Poe didn’t really care about his looks or health because of drinking. Although people think Poe died from rabies they believe that his cat gave it to him. His cat died of starvation and they was no evidence of scratches or bites. People believe this because over 33% of people back then died of rabies and the numbers were growing. It would make sense that he died from that but there's more evidence showing that he died from alcohol. Edgar Allen Poe started giving up when he first started drinking, He also drank a lot, And he already had alcohol in his system at the time of death. Also when people drink a lethal amount of liquor they can get alcohol poisoning and can cause you to get sick real bad or cause death. Evidence shows that Poe's death was caused by

On October 3, 1849, Edgar was found in the bathroom at the Gunnell’s Hall, a public house that was being used as a polling place for an election. The magazine editor, Joseph Snodgrass, sent Poe to the Washington College Hospital, where he spent his last days in and out of consciousness, far away from home, and surrounded by nothing but strangers. They were never able to explain what happened to him to cause any of this. On October 7, 1849, only at the age of…

Edgar Allan Poe’s writing is consider to be “dark” commonly with a tragic plot, the reason of this is mostly because of his tragic childhood. Some of the events that may have influenced Poe’s writing was primarly the fact that by the time he was 2 years old he was an infant with a death mother and a father that had abandon him, but also the fact that he was “adopted” by a family, who’s patriachal figure did not got along with Poe might have affected him. In other words, not having biological parents, having an adoptive father that you don’t get a long, and then having an adoptive mother that you get a long but dies before Poe was 21, made the american author a very cold-minded person. In my opinion all of this events limited Poe in developing emotions and like most of the writers, he was just portraying his thoughts through his…

His most well know works showcased his depression, in both The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat he showed how his sadness had driven him to insanity. In both these stories, the unnamed narrator, Poe says that he has an unexplainable hatred toward something in The Tell Tale Heart he when contemplating why he wanted the old man dead he stated “He had the eye of a vulture -- a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold” this shows that the narrator is not mentally stable as he wants to kill a man just because of the way his eye…

According to the researcher and writer of “Poe’s Death is Rewritten as Case of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol” Dr. R Michael Benitez believes it was because of rabies. Dr. Benitez states in his article that Poe was indeed hallucinating, and shouting at imaginary companions (187-188). Also, when woken up one day Poe refused to drink alcohol and could only drink water with great difficulty (187). Dr. Benitez also states that is a common case of rabies because “Rabies victims frequently exhibit hydrophobia or a fear for water because it is painful to swallow” (187). Poe didn’t know where he was, and couldn’t remember anything as well. Dr. Benitez also states when Poe came to him he was not drunk, and there was no evidence of him being bitten. Statistics show that most human rabies victims do not remember being bitten, and bites takes about a year to appear…

According to the author that “The rider was so sensitive to alcohol that a glass of wine would make him violently ill for days” (Silverman 188). This quote is significant because Poe was always ill. Another quote is “evidence of Poe’s chronic binges is strewn through his letters, in periodic admissions of recoveries” (Silverman 189) … Poe was found dead outside a bar. Therefore, I think he had to be drunk. Silverman says that “None of the signs of rabies confirm that he was not drunk” (Silverman 189). The alcohol could have just been catching up to his body. Therefore, is the reason I think Poe died of…

Second, Poe died from excessive alcohol poisoning because he was a known alcoholic, even before the incidents stated in the previous paragraph. According to a letter to the editor in the September 23, 1996 issue of the New York Times by Burton R. Polling and Robert E. Benedetto, Poe frequently showed evidence of his binge drinking sessions in his letters. Also there are letters fro his wife, Virginia Celmm, promising "reform" for his heavy drinking. Clearly, the unhealthy amount of booze consumed by Poe was most likely harmful to his body, and was probably the cause of his death.…

Like many of Poe's story's, no one really know the mystery behind Poe's dark and mysterious death. Within Poe's death there is two main theory's to how Poe actually died. One of the theories to Poe's death is that Poe died from alcohol. This theory explains that because of Poe being drunk he had got an illness from the cold and rain leading to a faster death. the second theory states that Poe had been bit by an animal and had died from rabies. No one knows for sure how he died and we may never know the mystery. However, I believe the well-known literary genius died from alcohol I think this because Poe was a known drinker and throughout his life you will notice that he drank more when he had been going through a death or heart break. In Poe's life at that time was when Virgina and his mother/parents had died he had also tried to love again but not work in his favor. Poe dying because of alcohol is the…
