For instance, the United States military we know of today is a diverse group of servicemen and women who are from many different racial backgrounds, mostly due to President Harry Truman’s Executive Order 9981. This order was signed on July 26, 1948 and stated that, “It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin." Therefore, the NAACP began registering black students in previously all white schools throughout the South. In Little Rock, Arkansas, 9 black students were registered to attend Little Rock Central High, but with much resistance from the community. After threats were made to hold protests at Central High and physically block the black students from entering the school, Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to support the segregationists on September 4, 1957. In return, on September 23, 1957 President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued Proclamation No. 3204, which federalized the entire 10,000-member Arkansas National Guard, taking it out of the hands of Faubus. He then ordered the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army to Little Rock to help integrate the black students into the school
