I was caught off guard by the violence. Buddhist teachings so often stress the importance of respecting all life, they are a non-violent community. Just the name alone made it difficult for me to see the connection to what we have learned in class. As I continued to watch the film I attempted to have an open mind, I realized the group turned into more than just an underground fight club. Their group turned into a full blown terrorist organization. Since the Buddhist community does not believe in violence this was a major problem I thought. I found that despite the violence there were still Buddhist teachings throughout this film. Throughout the film, the main character (Edward), went to many different support groups even if they were not applicable to him. Crying amongst a community gave him an outlet, a way to relieve stress, some may say even a form of meditation. Edward realized that there is great suffering in life, just as Siddhartha did when he left his palace for the first time. Edward, along with his alter ego Tyler, set up this underground fight club as a way to relieve stress and to find their/his inner peace. Tyler Durden, a figment of Edward’s imagination, was a more laid back version of himself. Tyler helped to make the fight club so
