In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting terrorism and honour crimes. I will define these crime types and discuss the motivations for carrying out these crime types. Statistics from the Global Terrorism Index (2015) and Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation ((IKWRO) 2016) will be included as well as the prevalence of the crime and who the perpetrator’s victims are more likely to be. Awareness from the police and charities will also be discussed.
Definition of Terrorism and Honour Crimes
Rising universally, terrorism has caused a death toll of 130,000 between 2006 and 2013. (Statistica 2016). Terrorism as defined by the Terrorism Act 2000 under s1 is said to be the use or threat designed to influence the government or to intimidate the public or a section of the public. Terrorism can be termed as the unlawful use of violence in order to intimidate civilians or politicians for ideological, religious, or political reasons with no regard for public safety. It is an umbrella term to include several offences covered by prevailing legislation such as The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. CPS.GOV.UK (2016) collectively with the CPS, ACPO and support groups have defined honour crimes as “a crime or incident which has been or may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and/or community.” Honour based violence uses practices to control behaviour within families and social groups to defend honour, cultural and religious beliefs.
