What is an invasive species.?
An invasive species is a plant, fungus, or animal species that is not native to a specific location (an introduced species), and which has a tendency to spread to a degree believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy or human health.
The Burmese Python
The Burmese Python is a large reptile (snake) that can grow up to 20 ft in length and are native to tropic and subtropic areas of Southern Asia. Their accidental introduction into the Wild in Florida, however, has shown the species does well in a somewhat aquatic environment in the Everglades, there are an estimated 30,000 Burmese Pythons that are now naturally feasting on endangered birds and alligators. The Burmese Pythons exhibit a top-down pressure in the ecosystem; …show more content…
their large numbers ultimately threaten the ecosystem as a whole, particularly by reducing populations of wildlife that contribute to the overall shape and health of the environment. Threats to an ecosystem as fragile as the Everglades require management strategies, which so far have been largely unsuccessful. A major concern is that the snakes will expand their range further inland and along the southern coast of the United States; however, there are still arguments about whether the environments in those areas are appropriate to sustain a population. Overall, the threat to wildlife and potentially the entire Everglades ecosystem makes finding effective management techniques extremely important.Organized “snake hunts” have been established to encourage public assistance in snake removal. In 2013, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission partnered with the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida to create the month-long “Python Challenge” (US Army Corps of Engineers 2013). It allowed members of the public over the age of 18 to hunt pythons and compete for cash prizes. A total of 68 snakes were removed at the end of the month. A second Python Challenge is scheduled in 2016 in hopes of attracting more participants.
The SnakeHead Fish
Another type of invasive species is The Snakehead fish or also known as “fishzilla” which is a huge fish that can grow up to 3ft in length and can lay up to 75,000 eggs a year, and can breathe and migrate on land. They were originally native to East Asian waters, various species of the snakehead have a decimated food chain in the US from Maine to California. Ecologists are mainly worried about the already endangered American species because the snakehead is a predator and will eat almost anything from plants, insects, crustaceans, if pond is scarce or dried out it can you the labyrinth organ and its large body to wiggle across land.An ecosystem is always a complicated web where many factors coexist with each other, and the introduction of a new species can disrupt the whole system. A new species can also bring along new parasites or diseases that can have an even bigger impact to the natural balance than the species itself. In some cases, the introduction of a new species cause interbreeding with similar species; so called genetic pollution. To get rid of them most fisherman catch them and sell them to people as food or make a market out of them so they don’t get put back into the water
The Cane Toad
And finally, The Cane Toad AKA “Rhinella marina” is native to Northern South America and Central America it can grow up to 3.9-5.9 in and age from 10-15 years, it was introduced and was used for pest control.
Cane Toads eat a wide variety of prey, breed opportunistically, have a far greater fecundity than native anurans and develop rapidly particularly in warmer waters. They are considered to be an extreme generalist with a tolerance for a broad range of environmental and climatic conditions and able to potentially occupy many habitats. Most significantly, they possess highly toxic chemical predator defences and many scientific and anecdotal reports exist of deaths of native predators that have attempted to consume Cane Toads. Unfortunately for them Cane Toads are each other’s worst enemy they compete and eat each other so they’ll make themselves extinct before they human race can.
