The story starts off by putting the reader into Jimmy Cross’ mind. Cross is the leader of the group that the book follows around Vietnam, he is only 24 or 25 years old and at towards the end of the book says he is not suited for the job at all. Cross occupies his mind all day with his beloved Martha, a woman from back home who has absolutely no romantic interest in Cross at all. He reads her letters, stares at her picture, keeps a pebble she sent in his mouth, and fantasizes about tying her to his bed and touching her knee all night. As though his confession of being an unfit leader was not enough he also gives away his inner most thoughts to the reader revealing just how incompetent he is. One day while fantasizing about Martha one of the men, Lavender, is shot in the head, Cross blames himself for the Lavender’s death and never lets it go. He burned Martha’s pictures and letters, and even threw away the pebble she sent him to help him focus on the safety of his men. Even 20 years later when Cross visits O’Brien, a fellow soldier and main storyteller of our novel, Cross is still full of guilt over Lavender’s death and obsessed with the uninterested Martha. “At one point, I remember, we paused over a snapshot of Ted Lavender, and after a while Jimmy rubbed his eyes and said he 'd never forgiven himself for Lavender 's death. It was something that…

Compassion is important in every walk of life. The definition of compassion is : a virtue of empathy for the suffering of others and a desire to alleviate that suffering. Compassion is important because it makes up who you are and is a strong part of human love. Without compassion, no human could ever get close to each other or function together as a society. Without compassion, people would not be able work together because they would not care about anyone else's pain. There would be no working together towards a common goal, that is one of the key pillars of society. Compassion is reason we have doctors and nurses. Compassion is reason that when we see someone hurt, on the ground, we help them up. In the novel, THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND, Kit and Nat show compassion for Hannah Tupper when her house burns down. She is their friend and they are sympathetic for her and do anything to help her. They even go into the building to retrieve her cats. They are feeling compassion for her and will help to alleviate her suffering, risking the possible legal repercussions of aiding a witch. Another instance in the novel in which the characters show compassion is when Kit teaches Prudence to read and when she defends Prudence from her mother by lying at the trial. The first time was compassion because kit saw prudence had low self worth because her mother has lead her to believe that she is stupid and never will be able to read. Kit sees her suffering and decides to alleviate her suffering, risking Goodwife Cruff's wrath by teaching her to read and write. Later in the book, once kit is accused of practicing witch craft and the townspeople present the evidence of the hornbook with Prudence's name written in it repeatedly, Kit lies for Prudence's sake. She doesn't want Prudence to get beaten by her mother. She risks possible death in compassion for Prudence's situation. Finally, prudence shows compassion to Kit. Against all odds, though she has been educated to not show…

The character qualities of individuals has become a popular theme in literature. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's book, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald recognizes the conflict between wealth and responsibility. In the book the narrator, Nick, describes how two of the main characters, Tom and Daisy, use their wealth to hide from what the poor must face everyday. Tom and Daisy lived on the banks of the East Egg, where they enjoyed the finer things in life. And no matter what happened they always seemed to care only of themselves. In the telling of Tom and Daisy's actions, Nick also seems to implicate that, in general, people and society use their wealth to hide behind. Tom, Daisy, and people in society dodge responsibility and reality with the aid of their great wealth.…

When Jim’s family is going through a tough financial time, Jim begins working as a grocery boy. Since being a grocery boy is not considered socially acceptable to the higher class, Jim is made fun of by his peers. This leads to him being ignored by society and to live a life of loneliness, drinking, and gambling. Years later, Jim runs into an old friend, Clark. Clark lives a full social life and is regarded as a ladies man, while Jim is still portrayed as someone who is a social misfit. Clark drags Jim into his high-class life and surprisingly Jim enjoys it. After a night out with Clark, Jim decides to change his ways and adapt to the high-class societal standards. Once again, Fitzgerald uses social status and society’s perception of others to show character development. Once society stops playing a prominent role in Jim’s life, he goes back to his old life of loneliness, drinking, and gambling. Fitzgerald uses society’s impact on his characters to show their development throughout each…

The playwright shows this though Charity’s bubbly personality, which can be seen in the scene where her and Oscar are trapped in the elevator. She is calm and collected and to help Oscar she starts singing a song about telling yourself to be brave so that you can do anything. This illuminates the point of having a positive outlook on life can make all the difference. To contrast this however, in the same scene where Oscar and Charity are stuck inside the elevator, Oscar is panicking and can not seem to let go of his insecurities, which is also paralleled in him not being able to tell his support group he is shy, belonging to the “church of the month group,” and eventually not…
