When The Whistle Blows by Fran Cannon Slayton is mysterious, yet exciting. I am not a big fan of reading, but this book kept me interested. If you ever want to find a good book about West Virginia, this is the right choice.
The story follows Jimmy every Hallows Eve from 1943 to 1949, which is also his father’s birthday. Jimmy has a mysterious edge to him, especially when it comes to finding out about “The Society.” He’s also somewhat of a rebel. Jimmy is always getting into some sort of mischief with his friends. On the other hand, his father is beyond strict. He is very hard on Jimmy and his brothers. Jimmy’s dad always finds a way to prove him and his brothers wrong.

His whole family is a part of the club and he is curious to know why he isn’t. Jimmy follows his brother Mike to a meeting, but eventually gets caught by a good friend named Heevie. “Go on and get yourself into the woods now, Jimmy, ‘fore your mama gets up.”(pg. 71) What is so important about “The Society” that he can’t know?
The writing style is different than most books. Jimmy is telling the story, not anyone else. The story is basically short stories within the whole story. It is historical fiction, which tells historic facts and made up details to make the story have greater interest.
Fran Cannon Slayton, the author of When the Whistle Blows, is a Virginia native. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia with a double distinguished major in Psychology and Religious Studies. She is often invited to speak at colleges and community events. In her free time, Fran likes to sing in the choir, meditates, and create artwork.
