The Crucible written in 1953. John is what some would call a tragic hero. He lived in a time period where any small act of sin could cost him his life. John naturally experience urges that men have to lust after a woman, that would be the downfall to his death. He was a prominent man who was a husband with children of his own. John cheated on his wife and felt unworthy, he then try to fix his wrong doing’s but only made it worse for himself. Abigail is only 16 and wants John but John knows he is married and loves his wife. After John cheated, he began to think of himself as low, unworthy, and base. John knew he had committed adultery and couldn’t bare to speak of it. He wanted to right his wrong’s with Elizabeth. John speaks to Elizabeth and says “… I mean you please you Elizabeth…”(miller 916). John saw himself as a traitor to his own beliefs and compare what he did as worse than the people framed of witchcraft. Lastly, John tries to save Elizabeth from hanging after Abigail names her as a witch. John tells Elizabeth that he will confess after Mr. Danforth tells him that she is pregnant. Hathorne tells John to sign the confession in which John does but he rips it up after he signs it. John says “… Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!(miller 969). John didn’t want to have innocence people hang for something they didn’t do. In his eyes he had Elizabeth forgiveness. In conclusion, John tried to right his wrongs, only to make his situation harder for himself. He went from being at the top to being all the way at the bottom. John felt he was no better than anybody and couldn’t honestly love himself for what he has done. John loved Elizabeth but couldn’t save his own life for something he
did.
