Are leaders born or made? What traits do effective leaders need to possess? I’ve asked myself these questions since becoming a leader. The search for the answers only grew as I became older and placed in roles of greater responsibility. I have used my experiences to shape my own philosophy about leadership. My current leadership philosophy is that in order to be a good and effective leader, you must possess certain traits, some of which you are born with, while some you are not. Certain lucky people are natural leaders, born with the ability to take charge of a group of people and lead them in any situation, while others need to be groomed and taught over time how to be a leader. I consider myself to be a mix of the two.

These relationships must have trust, commitment from both parties, and open communication to build confidence in the relationship. I have been able to learn and grow as a leader over time. I learned to utilize both what I saw as good and bad from my previous leaders and the traits I believe to have been born with. The traits I saw I lacked, were the ones that I had to learn about and add to my skillset.
My leadership philosophy is meant to empower and hopefully create a good working relationship and work environment where my Soldiers can see my commitment to them and our team. It is my goal to ensure my Soldiers are confident in my leadership ability by demonstrating the traits I see as necessary to have as a leader.
