might say his method of leadership was by all accounts more about being in control of everything and everyone through words and actions of fear. By using fear as his ultimate tool of motivation Jack was able to make others do his bidding for him. The others followed him because to them he was the one getting the food, he was the one making the decisions to steal from others to accomplish whatever task was at hand and by all accounts he was the one to fear because if he was not followed bad things happened to those who didn’t. Ralph on the other hand did things the way I feel a leader should. Both Ralph and Piggy had the compassion that Jack lacked they believed the group would survive better as a whole. You could debate that Ralph was the better leader because he had the leadership skills of someone with a heart but it was not Ralph that everyone ultimately followed. If you ask anyone who they think has good leadership skills today I feel as though many would say that no one specific person comes to mind. Agreed there are the typical leaders like the President, the Congress, Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, and Military and so on. We need everyone to do their part in order to succeed. Teachers have our best interests at heart. They teach with the knowledge they have and for most to the best of their abilities many times going above and beyond. They are not “leaders” in Government but without them we would not know the things we know, we would not learn the truth. It is because of them and because of those that came before them that we are taught our history. Doctors have the strength and ability through years of training and hopefully compassion to keep us healthy, Military through their dedication and leadership are the ones that keep our country safe. Everyone has the ability to be a good leader but it’s what they choose to do with that ability that sets them apart.
It is hard to say without being in that situation who I would follow or whether I would be the one to lead.
I would hope that I would be able to look at the whole situation and show by example that it is possible to have compassion, understanding, dedication and commitment to my fellow companions. The most important reason being to keep everyone safe. I feel by leading someone with fear it is not beneficial to the cause. I agree that there should definitely be some kind of rules in place but not to the extreme that was in Lord of the Flies. On the other hand if I was not a leader it would be hard to choose between Jack and Ralph. Do you choose the person you know has your best interests at heart and who chooses to lead with compassion or do you choose the person who seems more excited by the thought of being in control even though he has the means to feed you? Do you follow someone in fear or because you want to? I cannot make an informed opinion on who I would follow because they both have different qualities where if put all together would be the perfect leader. If it was as simple as age you could arguably say that it would be wiser to follow the oldest because they know more. Seeing as these were all children around the same age there is no way to define who knows more. You could only hope that the decision you make would be the right one in order to survive not as one person but as a group of people doing the best that they know how to do with the situation they are
in.
