It is evident from the beginning of the novel that Lennie was a danger around those around him as well as himself due to his lack of understanding of the society. Hence if it weren’t for George, Lennie would not survive due to his lack of understanding of the society. This is the contrast to Lennie as he is practically incapable of thinking for himself provided that George needed to constantly find them food, work, housing and has to bail Lennie out of trouble. In this instance, George knew he couldn’t look after Lennie forever, so he knew the best thing to do was to execute Lennie himself.
In addition to, George knew it was the right thing to kill Lennie as if he didn’t Curly would have killed him with more pain and slowly. This is evident as Curly states that he was going to shoot Lennie in the gut so he could die slowly and painfully. Thus, this demonstrates that George intention to kill Lennie was not unacceptable, but love by sparing him that miserable fate from dying scared and
