Critiquing Mean Girls
The film industry into one of the highest grossing within the larger entertainment sector with companies investing millions of dollars on single releases. As a result, there is a need for the production firms to create a trailer that intrigues the intended audience into buying cinema tickets or the DVDs for entertainment. For example, an investigation on how a trailer of one of the most popular movies in 2004, Mean Girls, applied art and cultural values can show how a film can attract viewers into making an investment in the film.

For example, there is the use of sarcasm when an African-American is introduced as the new student from Africa (Waters). Mean Girls also uses such terms as “the plastics” to refer to classmates who have an artificial view of the world they live in (Waters). Secondly, the movie is effective in using audio cues, such as dramatic silence, to emphasise certain peculiar scenes. For example, the assumption by the teacher that all black people come from Africa is noted by the silence when the student corrects her saying she hails from Michigan (Waters). Moreover, there is the use of music to keep the viewer entertained and attentive to various scenes. For instance, pop songs are used to introduce humorous scenes, while slower tunes are played during more sombre moments (Waters). Thirdly, Mean Girls uses visual effects to replicate African scenes though the entire movie was shot in Canada. The quality of video is also high as the colours are clearly defined and sharp. Therefore, it is plausible to argue that Mean Girls extensively used audio, visual, and text techniques in creating a memorable trailer that was adequate in encouraging its
