Mexican culture has been characterized as an accepted background of values: familism, respeto and simpatia (respect and congeniality), curanderismo (folk healing), religiosity/spirituality, and the importance of language are among the most important (Cultural Responses to Health Among Mexican… 2007). In a typical Mexican family, the father is the breadwinner. The man can also be known as a machismo. Machismo is refer to as manliness and has positive and negative views in reference to it. The man in the family holds great responsibility, and makes majority of decisions. The mother falls under the caregiver role, whom force holds the family together and shares cultural wisdom (Cultural Responses to Health Among Mexican… 2007). Family is an important value in the Mexican culture.
When comparing to the American culture, it is said that Mexican’s place a higher value on family. Americans tend to give more of their attention to their profession,
Culture diversity Sensitivity is important when dealing with Mexican patients for they tend to be very private and always need to feel respected. It is important to explain what must be done to them first and why it must be done. Mexicans already have the upmost respect for health care providers so by doing this will only help build their trust. Language is another thing to look out for not just for competence, bot also the cultural meaning people attach to it. Culturally congruent care is meaningful, supportive, and facilitative because it fits valued life patterns of patients (Potter 113). Developing cultural sensitivity to Latino patients shows great recognition and appreciation of their diversity. Just like with any patient, Mexicans should be treated as individuals first, but at the same time understanding their cultural demands. Connecting these cultural gaps will result in better healthcare
