In the beginning of the movie the bishop, the family sits far apart from one another while trapped inside from the rain. The boys sit together with a medium shot as they play a game the shot widens from Mr bishop to Mrs bishop and then to Suzy, the apartness of the characters within the story are expressed within their placements in the scene.
There is also apartness shown with the narrator every shot of him within the movie is either a medium or a wide shot. He is also the only character that gets direct lighting, besides in the play of Noah's ark, and the only character shown wearing such a great amount of red. This puts him distinctly apart from the rest of the characters showing that he knows the most and that he's important. On the significance of lighting within the film, it at points happens with the storms in the movie, major plot point that wasn't sad or happened in the rain it was mostly just poor decision making. For example jumping off the roof, in an inadvertent Romeo and Juliet like risk, to jump into the water in the hurricane to escape the church. Every adult decision was made in the dark and that might be a dark way of showing the loss of innocence and how to become an adult and making hard decisions can be dirty work that people don't like to think
