Essay On My Big Fat Greek Wedding
The movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a very clear example cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is differences based on cultural, ethnic and racial factors. This movie was about a Greek female, named Toula Portokalos, who was embarrassed by her culture. Her father, Gus only wants her to do three things: get married to a greek boy, have kids with a greek boy and cook greek food. Gus is ethnocentric, this means that he believes that being Greek is better than being in any other culture. In the beginning of the movie the father talks about how he came to the United States from Greece to make living life easier for her and their family. This makes a reference to many ethnic groups in the U.S. Culture can be values, beliefs, attitudes, languages, symbols, rituals, behaviors and customs. She loved him so much. Ian told her he would do whatever it takes to be with her because he loved her that much. Ian decided to get baptised in a Greek Orthodox church to prove his love for Toula to her family. He also agreed on getting married in a Greek Orthodox church and he used Toula’s family for his groomsmen. Maria insists on making “all things Greek” for this wedding. She does the invitations and spells the names of Ian’s parents wrong. Another family member makes the bridesmaids dresses for Toula. It’s already a crazy morning in the Portokalos household. All the bridesmaids are downstairs and are extremely loud. When Toula wakes up they all follow her through the house and everybody is getting ready for the big day. After the wedding the family is at the reception and Gus makes a joke that Ian’s name having a Greek root meaning. Gus then makes a toast and lets them know he bought a house for them!
