According to the American Hospital Directory, Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center had a total of 109,449 patient days since January of 2017. The number will continue to increase each day as people are admitted to the hospital for various reasons. The purpose of this paper is to discuss patient centered care and interrelated concepts of health care quality and critical thinking.
Patient Centered Care
The definition of patient centered care is “care based on partnership between the patient, their families and the hospital staff provider that focuses on the patient’s values, preferences, and needs” (Boykins, 2014, p. 40). Patient centered care involves seeing the patient as an individual as well as working together with the health providers to develop an appropriate plan of care for him/her. To make the situation well, the decision of health care should revolve around the patient leading to patient centered care, which can support determining the accurate plan for the patient’s outcome. Patient centered care indicates to health care quality. Providing safety, efficiency, timeliness, and effectiveness quality can reduce the problems of patient not having the necessary care they need, preventing medical errors that can harm the patient, and decrease the overuse of care that the patient does not need. Critical thinking is an importance and a professional practice for nurses.
