Essay On Probation
On September 5th I started my internship with the Erie County Probation Department. As soon as I got there, I was greeted by PO Tabor and directed me to get an ID. Once I got my ID probation officer Tabor, introduced me to the Probation Officer I would be shadowing during the rest of the semester. For the rest of the semester I would be staying with probation officer Cheatom. For the next following hour officer Cheatom introduced me to the other Probation Officers and also where everything is at such as the break rooms and elevators. After I got a tour of the probation department I sat in with Cheatom because she was covering for another probation officer. an interesting case that po Cheatom covered was the case of a young girl named Ariana. The client told Cheatom that she had police contact however, she was …show more content…
A mental illness does play a part when it comes to the criminal activities of the clients. there are many clients on probation who suffer from schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder and also ADHD. I believe these mental illnesses play a part in their criminal activity because it clouds their judgement.
Another issue that I noticed is that many clients have some type of alcohol or drug problems. Many clients on probation are in some type of treatment for their addictions. It is mandatory for clients on probation to report to any treatment site or else it could be a violation. The client's amount of treatment time can range depending on the treatment site. Alcohol and drugs can also cloud the client’s judgement when it comes to criminal activities.
Lastly, another interesting fact that I noticed was that there was many DWI probation officers. In the city of Buffalo there are many cases that involves drinking while driving. In this probation department there are 10 probation officers that only handle cases that specifies with

In the beginning, I had to ride the bus to the probation office Monday through Thursday to check in by 7:00 in the morning. I didn’t have to go on Fridays because that was the day I had to go to the courthouse and sit in front of the judge, the rest of the team, and most of the other participants in the program. It was held in the courtroom with the judge at the stand, the remainder of the team arranged in a semi circle around the “hot seat”, and the other participants in the benches. The jury box was reserved for those currently incarcerated.…

Standard conditions include attending group or individual therapy, random drug testing, avoiding people or places that associate with criminal activity, the offender not committing another crime at any level, and gaining employment or education. Also, terms may include compliance with all court orders, regular reporting to a probation officer, home searches, weapon prohibition, unable to leave the county or state, and drug and alcohol restriction. Day reporting centers are used for those on probation. Day reporting centers serve under the special conditions of…

There are many reports that a probation officer must give. For this particular discussion, I will focus on a presentence report. A judge relies “on presentence reports, prepared by probation officers” when they are ready to sentence an offender (Bergman, n.d.). They (the judge) use this report to help “in making sentencing decisions” (Bergman, n.d.). A well written presentence report will have the following information to help a judge in making his or her decision, “circumstances of the offense”, a “defendant’s personal history” as well as any criminal background available, and a “victim impact statement” (Bergman, n.d.). In the end, a well-written report (of any kind) will help the person making a decision to make the best one possible.…

During the Spring 2013 semester, I was granted the opportunity to intern at Denton County Juvenile Probation. This institution is responsible for delinquent juveniles that have committed a criminal act. The institution consists of several departments: intake, the court, detention, the POST adjudication program, and JJAEP (Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program). My intern experience consisted of working with juveniles placed in the Courage to Change (CTC) POST adjudication, which is a diversion program of the Texas Juvenile Detention Department (TJJD). However, while interning, I was able to experience the many facets of the juvenile justice system, from the juveniles’ entry into Denton County Juvenile Detention Center, all the way to their release from the Courage to Change program and their re-entry back into society. For the majority of my time as an intern, I worked under the caseworkers in the CTC program, which managed the majority of casework load for each juvenile that was sentenced to the program. The daily activities that I performed while interning included: filing of room checks, group work, and case file information, while also helping the caseworkers fulfill any code greens (memos to the caseworkers from the residents for needed materials or to notify them of any information).…

Typically, the person that prepares the presentence investigation report (PSIR) has a heavy responsibility in report writing. In our criminal justice classes, we have identified this person as the probation officer of the defendant. The purpose of writing the PSIR is to inform the judge about the conditions of the defendant and recommend treatment or sentencing options. This is a very difficult decision to make because the options are endless. Sometimes, the recommendations are rarely followed. The PSIR reports are typed, double spaced and numbered by line on the left side margin of the report. This makes it easier to make necessary correction and refer to different lines when questions arises. However, the questions will more than likely…

Having a mental illness alone isn 't usually enough The mental illness has to be so severe that the defendant is unaware that his or her actions are wrong or is uncontrollably compelled to commit a criminal act. Typically, people who can legitimately claim insanity have a history of severe mental illness, although occasionally someone commits a crime during their first psychotic break. Even when the defendant 's mental illness is obvious and acute, the insanity defense may not work. A more common verdict in Michigan is guilty but mentally ill, which doesn 't impact the sentence but could affect the services that the defendant receives in the criminal-justice system. Do you want a person who rapes, murders people or even acts extreme violence to hurt you or a loved one? There are families out there that lose a loved one to an adolescent just because they wanted to see what it's like to kill another human being. These families are the ones that suffer and can never get back what they lost. These teenagers do deserve a sentence of life without parole because they have committed such heinous crimes. I agree with the minority of the Supreme Court Justices who believe in mandatory life without parole because those adolescents broke the law, you must think about the victim’s family, and these teenagers killed another human being and planned to do so.…

However, one of the things often heard from victims is how they hope that no one else has to go through what they went through, and that they do not want the person who victimized them to do it to anyone else. If a persons mental illness is somehow responsible for them committing a crime, then the best way to increase the chances they will not commit further crimes is to manage that mental illness. The majority of criminals do not spend the rest of their life in prison. Helping them cope with the things that drove them to commit a crime is a more logical way of protecting the community. And as evidenced by the number out of Michgan treatment is far better for the tax payer in the long run.…

I’m writing this letter to prove that the decision I made affected a lot of people and I've learned from my mistakes. I do not blame anybody but myself for the situation I’m currently in right now. Over the course of the years in school my grades have been affected by many different obstacles and personal challenges. My first semester was really tough for me socially and academically. My friends were doing things I knew wasn't right, but I never said anything. I wanted to be "cool", Until they started offering me to do the same. I didn't want to get in trouble, and I knew what the consequences could be, but I didn't want them to think I wasn't doing it because I would tell someone, so I just went along with it. I took the pills and i didn't feel any different nothing was happening. I told my friends that it didn't do anything so the next she gave me six more. First, it got hard for me to stay awake, I couldn't concentrate, I was scared that if I fell asleep I wouldn't wake up again. My friend just told me it was normal the first time, but then I really messed up and did it again, every time taking more because my body was becoming immune to the pain pills she had been giving me. I got so used to it, that I was asking her for more, begging her, paying ridiculous amounts for them, until we got caught. I quickly realized what had happened to me, I was in a hole, and there was no way to dig myself back out. We got in so much trouble, and since then I've learned not to trust as many people, and to definitely make the correct decisions, because I hate myself for putting myself out there when I knew it was wrong from the beginning.…

The agency in which I completed my internship at was the Madison County Probation Department. I was assigned to the Edwardsville Hillsboro Satellite Office. The staff of the Madison County Probation Department is responsible for the supervision and services to both adult and juvenile offenders on probation. They work to rehabilitate offenders by conducting offender risk assessments, enforce the conditions of court orders, and help to ensure that the offenders are aware of the impact of their crime on the victims and the public. Probation officers help judges to decide on the sentence, interview probationers to determine the effectiveness of probation supervision, provide pre-sentence reports on offenders who are charged, and recommend the revocation of probation when necessary. The different fields in which probation officers are specialized in include: intensive supervision, adult offenders, adult sex offenders, juvenile offenders, juvenile sex offenders, and substance abuse offenders.…
