Although many of today’s society carry this flaw, the Bible asks for people to do otherwise. While the Puritan society views greed as a great sin, since it is one of the seven deadly sins presented in the bible, present society views this sin as a personal character flaw within thyself. In present society, people avoid getting in interactions that involve money with those who possess this sin. The Puritans would handle this sin by judging the particular individual until they learn the error of their ways unless they are a man of power in their community. This is seen in the Scarlet Letter as the character Governor Bellingham lives in a lavish home that is “planned after the residences of gentlemen of [the] fair estate in his native land.” Although the Puritans are supposed to live equal to one another, Governor Bellingham does not abide by that statement. Bellingham lives in a lavish home that is obviously greater than most of the community. The sin of greed is not only visible in the Scarlet Letter, but is also visible in the short story The Devil and Tom Walker. The wife’s greed is so strong that she took her most expensive items to the Devil in exchange for Kidd the pirate’s treasure. Tom Walker’s wife was willing to give anything to the devil in order to have the riches of Kidd the Pirate’s treasure. However, it only ended in horrible
