School dress codes are sexist towards girls and promotes a rape culture. Rape culture is a term used to describe sexual assault, rape, and violence. This includes victim blaming and sexual objectification toward high school girls (Colorado State University 1). School dress codes have a negative attitude towards teenage girls. Most dress codes are directed towards the female gender. Sajani Clerk was dressed coded for wearing a flattering outfit that she felt confident in. Her tight pants and shoulder revealing shirt was said to be “distracting” to the male students, and was told she had no self-respect for her body (Sajani Clerk 1). Most dress codes include:
• Shirt or blouse covering the shoulders, armpits, and midriff.
• Midriff tops, short tops, tube tops, tank tops are not permitted.
• Dresses, skirts, and shorts shall be mid-thigh in length or longer.

Boys do not have to attend dress code meetings at all (Sajani Clerk 7). Today in society girls are already judged enough on their appearance. Dress codes just make it worse. Not only are dress codes sexist, it’s also embarrassing to be dress coded in front of your classmates. Although clothing like leggings and spaghetti straps are unflattering on some, boys don’t get distracted by a bra strap or by a girls shoulder. Sajani Clerk was confident in what she was wearing. She was proud about how she was presenting herself at school. For them to tell her she had no self-respect for her own body is not only rude but incredibly ignorant. In conclusion, school dress codes are sexist toward teenage girls. Yes we need some dress codes to an extent, but not such strict ones.
