In South Carolina, a group of high school girls wore shirts that read “I am not A distraction”. The capitalized letter “a” is a reference to The Scarlet Letter, a book about a women forced to wear the letter in bright red ink to represent her adultery and other sins to the public. The high schoolers did this as they felt school dress codes unfairly aimed at them.
Completely abolishing dress codes in public schools is not necessary. I understand rules are set in so people can rationally cover up. It also keeps offensive clothing or clothes presenting profanity out of schools. What is not necessary is the bias ruling behind the dress codes. Sexist standards set in for girl’s school clothing is shockingly scandalous.
The dressing decree is public schools is dominating to men and degrading to females. The relevance of equal dress codes is to prevent girls from growing up while prioritizing what others think about what they are wearing and disregarding their own comfortability.
