Most of our perceptions are usually influenced by the media and others that surround us. Texas has fallen into various stereotypes, including that it is a primarily white dominant state. People from other states around the county assume that if you’re from Texas you live in a ranch, love guns, work in the oil business, or listen to county music. And just like various musical genres exist in Texas so does a diversity of ethnicities. If we observe how the media has mentioned Texas in the past and present, we can see nothing has changed. The media has maintained its information bias favoring the usual topics. Texas is mostly mentioned in topic of politics assuring to let us know that we are a strong republican state. We have remained a republican state since the 1980s, making it a very strong influence on the white population. An issue with Hispanic and Latino ethnicities is language barriers. I have seen the various commercials in Spanish this year trying to influence people to go vote. I believe that Texas has an opportunity to change do to our ethnic influence and thus it is extremely crucial to project and try to influence others through the media as well. Projecting our presidential candidates debates in Spanish and allowing them to know they can go out there and vote despite the language barrier is an important factor for Texas. We also have to take into consideration of the age barrier, that many first generation Americans are too young to actually participate in voting but can still be influenced for the future.
