Before Jonas has to take the burden of the memories he is honest and apprehensive and still mostly a kid. But once Jonas gets chosen as Receiver everything changes. Also in the beginning Jonas still follows all the rules of the Community including honesty. Jonas has to restate of the weird and awkward dream he had the last night because of the rule saying that there had to be story telling in the morning. And even though he would rather not tell the story because he is honest and does not lie he retells the story. Near the end Jonas becomes deceitful but also brave. In the beginning Jonas still hasn’t been chosen a job yet and does not have to hold the burden as Receiver yet, but his new job is about to be chosen and he is feeling apprehensive about what he could be chosen. But when he actually is chosen he feels pride and courage for the long and painful training ahead of him. The Committee of Elders explain that his training will be hard and painful but Jonas understands this and still goes through with the training, this shows bravery. Jonas is changed by the memories and their wisdom and with this wisdom he can see most of things he had never noticed in a whole new light and notices things that the Community and the people do not understand. Jonas notices with the memories that this Community is not as much of a Utopian society as he thought it
