To begin, The Great Galveston Hurricane was the deadliest hurricane in the history of the United States with a total of 5,000 to 8,000 deaths. (Brittanica) It was also, one of the most costly hurricanes in the United States, coming in at third. The hurricane occurred in September of the 1900’s and caused almost 2,600 buildings to be destroyed. Hurricanes grow quickly, and cause a good amount of damage, but it is possible to safely survive one. First off, hurricanes use warm moist air as a fuel to keep going. That is why hurricanes only happen when they are near the equator in the warmer water. The warm air with the higher pressure pushes the cooler air which the lower pressure into that area. Then, the new air rises and becomes warm moist air. Storms on the north side of the equator are spinning to the left, so counterclockwise while the storms on the south side of the equator spin or turn right, so clockwise. This happens because of how the earth turns on its axis. Furthermore, hurricanes can reach speeds up to 75-200 miles per hour. (Erickson) This particular hurricane had speeds of 135 miles per hour and, was a category 4 which means the damage was extreme and the storm surge was 13-18.
