Essay On The Internet

As the internet becomes more integrated into people’s lives, more relationships are being developed over the internet. After reviewing evidence, I have concluded that it is possible to make real friends over the internet. Skeptics have stated allegations to paint a narrative that leads people to believe that this deed is unreachable. Despite this I firmly believe that you can make real friends online.
More people are using the internet as a means of making social relationships. The Pew Research Center has found that 92% of the people they polled used Facebook and 29% used Linkedin as social networking sites. This research proves that as a larger number of people are using the internet, there is a rise in the use of social networking and they are creating more relationships with new people online. Sally Austin states that the internet gives you the opportunity to be anonymous. This feature is attractive to a broad audience and is one of the reasons that so many peopled use social networking sites. The magazine article further shows that the internet gives you access to people in different parts of the world. Throughout the globe, societies are developing infrastructure that gives internet access to communities. Opponents argue that social networks do not make relationships interactive enough to be considered “real” friendship. However, social networks are currently being designed to make relationships feel real and personal.
In addition, because of the internet the number of quality relationships created is on the rise. The Pew study provides further evidence that the average online American has 158 more social ties. This is because of the heightened exposure to other people that the internet provides. Also these sites have developed systems that encourage you to check the profiles of people who you are not yet familiar with. The internet’s ability to connect users who are miles apart has increased the number of social ties the average person has. Millions of different individuals are connected to the net at any given time and this gives people endless opportunities to meet new faces. The think tank’s polls revealed that there is a correlation between the number of social network users and the number of close friends people report to have. Social networks lead to such results because of the ability to spend hours messaging a friend at any time. The blog post presents the argument that creating relationships online will take away your time that you should be using with friends in person. The problem with this argument is that source 2 never provides evidence which shows that the experiences created with your virtual friends are worse than the experiences created with offline friends. Overall, I believe that the internet gives people the chance to make real friends. The increased accessibility to new people and the designs of social networking sites has made this unimaginable feat possible. Doubters try to claim that you cannot make real friends online since you unable to get that personal connection. Nonetheless, evidence shows this idea to be far from the truth and that the personal connection is recreated online.

The new type of friendships we see forming now are interpersonal communication with networking sites. There is a complex debate over the Internet and whether it is making society smarter or dumber. For that matter the debate focuses on the Internet and the intellectuality of individuals, and if the Internet hinders or it progresses society as a whole. Other critics argue that the Internet contributes to the decline of our mental state. On the other hand, others argue that the Internet promotes and encourages literacy by its ability in providing limitless amount of information at the stroke of a key. In the articles, “Does the internet make you smarter” by Clay Shirky supporter of literacy by internet and, “Does the internet make you dumber”, by Nicholas Carr unsupporter of literacy by internet, portrays that each article have different points of views regarding the internet making us smarter or dumber. Some debate that Facebook, and other social networking sites are undermining our ability to communicate and the use of such sites dehumanise what is an important part of community life and living together. However, if anything, I believe these social networking websites allow us the opportunity to meet and form friendships with people that we may not otherwise communicate with and to create these friendships faster. They allow us to keep in contact with friends and family, whether they are in our own city or on the other side of the world, with greater ease. In today’s fast paced environment nobody has time to sit down daily and respond to individual emails; Facebook and MySpace allow us to reach all of our friends and colleagues with a simple click of a button. For the introverts among us, social networking eliminates the pressure of face to face contact and can help those shy people with the initial contact of meeting others. Facebook’s photo sharing application is rated the most used on the Internet, drawing more than twice as much traffic as the next three sites combined. These statistics show a great emphasis on the online community, especially when 14 million photos are being uploaded every day. With active users doubling every six months and more than half of active users returning daily it is clear to see people all over the world are embracing the convenience of social networking.…

It has now become easier for people to meet new friends on online platforms. The patience that is required to build a long lasting relationship is no longer there. Traditionally, people would spend days and even months trying to get to know each other. This was not done over the phone but through face-to-face interactions that made it possible for people to learn each other. This helped to grow the relationship from one level to another. However, the Internet has made it impossible for people to connect in real life. People are excited to meet other people online and they spend hours chatting on these platforms but never really get to know the person they are chatting with (Parasar). It becomes hard for such individuals to held real discussions when they meet face to face because they have become used to chatting online. The reason why many relationships are failing is because people have lacked the patience required to nurture a relationship. The Internet has led to the erosion of a foundation upon which a relationship can be built. People are quick to walk away from relationships and even marriages because they accessed information online on how to deal with their relationships. Communication has been greatly affected by the advancement of the Internet. People have become more comfortable with expressing their emotions on social platforms than they are on face-to-face…

Because of technology becoming quite advanced at a rapid rate, there has been a vast variety of apps on the app stores for people to engage in social interactions, such as via twitter, snap chat, face book, instagram, as well as tumbler. People feel as if being a part of social networking they do not need to establish and maintain relationships with people in person. We depend so much on technology to where we freeze when it is time to interact with someone face to face without the help of a technology based app or website. Although people see all the pros and advances from technology, they look past the cons of technology that hinder people's ability to maintain an actual relationship with different people outside of technology. Majority of the people we are friends with today we have met through a social network, not only is this where we primarily meet, but this is how we socialize with each other. If technology was not so advanced and did not have numerous tools for socializing our friend list would be half of what it is now. According to "Me and My 400 friends; The Anatomy of College Students' Facebook Networks Their Communication Patterns and Well Beings", describes 'socializing" as the ability to talk to someone and friend them on social networks" (Mango). Being said, we focus our relationships with others through technology. According to the previously mentioned article, statistics show the idea behind technology is to create relationships with people without experiencing the hardest part the skill of being social (Mango). Renowned psychologists Robert Kraut and Vicki Lundmark performed several extensive experiments on various people, measuring deep psychological effects of severe internet use. From the collected data, on average they found that relationships do have the potential to cultivate online, but to a certain extent. According to Kraut and Lundmark, “weak” bonds were easily broken friendships with occasional communication, “deep” bonds on the other hand were strong relationships with common daily communication. Most of the connections made online, remained as “weak” connections and rarely became “deep” connections. They also found out that the more time spent on the internet, the number of “weak” relationships were more likely to increase and in return “deep” social relationships were bound to decline.…
