When understanding many of these processes one can understand why short-term memory is better considered working memory. Baddeley and Hitch came up with a working memory model. This model consists of a phonological loop and a visuospatial scratchpad that is controlled by a central executive processor. There are other theories of working memory; most of which built off of this particular model the Baddeley-Hitch Model. Baddeley and Hitch basically explains how working memory performs. Working memory is collectively the short-term mental storage and the manipulation operations involved with performing cognitive tasks. Basically anything an individual does that involves short-term memory tasks. Examples given like remembering …show more content…
Imagine that an individual could not remember a phone number prior to dialing it or figure out a tip at a restaurant. This task would be difficult with an impaired working memory. If one had damaged short-term memory or damaged one component of this process within the brain it could be quite difficult for an individual to do everyday things. For example, individuals who have brain damage on their left hemisphere could display impairments in their verbal working memory and most likely could not remember things in a verbal sense. Perhaps if this person’s right hemisphere working memory (their non-verbal working memory) were intact they would have to read your name and rehearse it to remember it using their non-verbal working memory. That is, if no other parts are damaged of …show more content…
It is the belief that through brain training the working memory will improve substantially and the overall intelligence can improve as well. Now, what is intelligence? Is it ones education level? Intelligence is the ability to learn, understand, to deal with new or trying situations. Now how is intelligence measured? How would one even know how to improve it? Intelligent is measured by assessment tests, which measures working memory ability as one component within it. To name a few: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and the Stanford & Binet testing kit. Many aspects make up a persons intelligence
