Essay Sample Introduction
A thesis statement can simply be a sentence that presents the central topic of the paper. Starting with this basic statement results in a straightforward essay that summarizes aspects of the subject matter. A more effective thesis statement reflects a specific viewpoint or opinion about the subject matter; the essay, in turn, represents the detailed argument that supports this viewpoint. Most teachers prefer this kind of essay; they are interested in your own perspective, rather than a summary of factual information. The more original the thesis statement, the more original—and impressive—your essay will be.
Here are some sample topics and the effective thesis statements that might emerge from them. Topics | Thesis Statements | American Literature of the 1920s | Most American literature of the 1920s depicts a growing anxiety regarding the dehumanizing effects of industrialization. | Modern Psychological Theories and Treatments | Although dreams play a central role in both Freudian and Jungian theory, there are crucial differences in the ways in which dreams are interpreted. | The Cold War | The foreign policy of the United States during the Cold War indirectly served to escalate domestic problems on American soil. |
In order for a thesis statement to be effective, it should be specific and reflect your own ideas. It should: * Be specific. An effective thesis statement is not too broad or general; instead, it should say something very specific about your topic. By being very specific, a thesis statement ensures that the essay remains focused and does not veer off into unrelated territory that distracts the reader. * Reflect your own ideas. Most professors will be more impressed when you express your own thoughts and ideas rather than regurgitating someone else’s. A more effective thesis statement will therefore be original and reflect your own outlook on the subject. Make certain the thesis is phrased entirely in your own words. * Be something

A good thesis statement is a way to help guide your paper. The thesis statement provides an outline for how the writer will progress with the paper. I try to create a strong thesis statement, construct my paper, and then finalize by thesis based on my points. It tells the readers what to expect from the entire paper. On the other hand, poor thesis statement will do the opposite. It may leave your audience puzzled. What is a thesis statement? A thesis is an interpretive statement, not merely a factual one. It offers an explanation for events, not merely a description or summary of what happened. Consider the difference between the declarations that "the North won the Civil War" and "the North used its greater population and industrial might to defeat the Confederacy." Or, alternately, consider the difference between the following statements: “The South lost the Civil War” and “Ultimately, the South failed to muster the manpower, resources, and popular will necessary to win the war against the Union.” You are encouraged to review the guide to writing a history essay and sample essays posted on our Blackboard class site.…

A thesis takes a position on an issue. It is different from a topic sentence in that a thesis statement is not neutral. It announces, in addition to the topic, the argument you want to make or the point you want to prove. This is your own opinion that you intend to back up. This is your reason and motivation for writing.…

A thesis statement includes an idea, opinion, or theory which the paper will defend or question. Note how the following two thesis statements include a clear position. Further, the order of points in the thesis statements (in bold text) will help structure the logical development of the entire paper.…
