The negative impact of floods is very uncontrollable. During a long period of dry weather, it suddenly begins to rain. Rainfall refills the water that supplies and provides a drink for every living thing. It also helps with drought and washes pollutants from the atmosphere. However, streams and rivers can’t handle the heavy rain so water overflows and produces a flood. As a result, they caused economic losses, damage in urban and rural communities and damage the environment.
In the past, it was not obvious how floods affect an economy of a country. Today, the economic losses from floods has become very considerable. In 2005, the flooding of New Orleans buried up to 80% of the city. Many homes were washed away in flooded water. About $108 billion USD were needed to rebuild (2005 Hurricane Katrina, n.d.). People may be unable to get to work, to make money and use services. Their insurance increased never having happen before. As a result, economic loss comes from floods.
Year ago, people lives were affected by floods. In 2013, a flood wasted over parts of Queensland and New South Wales. Almost 7,500 residents of Bundaberg and patients at the Bundaberg Hospital had to evacuate because of widespread flooding and the surrounding suburbs (2013 Tropical Cyclone Oswald, n.d). Schools were closed; hospitals were filled with sick people; and water and power supplies were interrupted. It usually takes years for affected community to go back to normal from floods.
Previously, people saw that floods were the part of cycle of nature; however, now the environment suffers when floods occur. The water level of the river in north India rises every year and floods the low-lying areas (Floods - Delhi, n.d.). The crops rot and perish. Damage to surrounding, farm, wild life, zoo, urban community-trees, water bodies, grass sink, polluted drinking water and lead to diseases.
