Essay Why American Olympic Athletes Should Be Paid
American Olympic athletes should be paid more money for training and competing. They currently do not make enough which is leading to less than optimal performance for the American team. Most olympians are making less than $15,000 per year(less than minimum wage), which makes it tough for them to train to their potential and win. America’s top athletes are going to play football, basketball, or baseball instead of competing in the Olympics. We are also being beat by other countries that pay and value their athletes more. American Olympians do not get any pay for being an olympian besides medal bonuses. Most American Olympic athletes are currently making $15,000 or less annually, which is slightly less than the federal minimum wage. Athletes have to balance working a job and the time consuming training that they must do. This results in athletes not getting enough rest, training, or money, which is all problemental and detrimental to their health. If athletes were paid by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), they would be able to financially support themselves, and therefore perform better, which would make money for the USOC. …show more content…
There were 558 American athletes competing in the olympic games in Rio 2016, while there are currently 1696 athletes in the NFL, and they are paid on average 1.9 million dollars yearly, compared to the 15,000 dollars that olympians make. If olympic athletes get paid more, there would be much more attraction to the olympic sports, and therefore America would score better, because the top athletes would be competing on the olympic level. If being an olympian can be seen as a financially stable career, there would be much more publicity for it, therefore USOC would make more money and therefore be able to pay athletes

Some colleges make more money than others. This graph shows the schools with the most profit in their sports programs. Somebody could say that the athletes bring in an enormous amount of money. According to Jeff Dorfman, a professor of Economics at the University of Georgia, only a few collegiate sports actually bring in money. Therefore, an athlete in a sport that isn’t very profitable wouldn’t make nearly get as much as an athlete in a very profitable sport. Along with the sports being very profitable they also have to pay for an even larger variety of different things. Student athletes should not be paid because of the money that would be paid to them. The money that they would be paid could be used to advance other things in the university such as better libraries, science labs, fixing up the dorms, or even improving their athletic facilities. I think that professional athletes should be paid less money because most athletes are paid more than doctors, lawyers, and armed forces members. I also think that since athletes don’t play year-round, they shouldn’t be paid as much, and another point is that the money isn’t being put to the best possible…

College athlete salary has been a controversial issue for many years. Many debate that they do not need a salary and that all they need is the scholarship that they were given to get into the school. At the same time people argue that they need compensation for putting their bodies and careers on the line, they bring in lots of profit for the school, and need money moving forward in their professional career and in life after college. Kevin Ware, guard for the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball national champion Louisville Cardinals, is a prime example of athletes putting their bodies and potentially their careers on the line for their school. In the elite eight round of the NCAA tournament against the No. 2 ranked Duke, with Louisville up by one point with Duke in possession of the ball, one of the Duke players attempts a three point shot and Ware jumps to block it and lands awkwardly.…

Some people say that the student-athletes have already gotten paid with scholarship money, however, they don’t get to choose where that money goes. Scholarship money that they receive goes toward tuition and room and board. College athletes often need money to pay for food, but unfortunately they can’t use that scholarship money. College student-athletes should be compensated because it will increase the graduation rate, they have no time left to get a job, and they deserve a fair share of the profit.…

These athletes are working at the top of their game for their schools and are doing services to the college that seem to be overlooked.
