Essay - a Gift for My Mother
Essay: A gift for My Mother

The story is written by Viv McDade. She was born in Ireland, grew up in Zimbabwe and lived in South Africa for most of her life. While living in South Africa, she was a part of some organizations. She now lives in Ireland.
In the short story the narrator is a girl called Lucy. The story is told by a first person narrator and from her viewpoint. When a story is told by a first person, you need to realize that what the narrator is recounting might not be the objective truth. A first person narrator often tries to justify her actions, because she wants to put herself in a positive light to the readers. We know that Lucy is the Narrator but she is also the main character in the story which you should have in mind while reading the essay.
Lucy is a girl at the age of ten. She wants to her parents to feel good about each other. She obeys her mother without protesting. She hears her mother’s “dreamy voice”; when she gives her mother some flowers. She wants her to be happy. She is a girl who cares very much for her family. She is only 10 years old and could easily be called a caring girl. She is respectful to strangers, which we also see when she sells flowers to them.
As it’s mentioned in the text, she lives in a poor family. Her relation with her father is very good, she feels that her father always helps her when she is nervous or when she feels unintelligent, especially in her homework. Her father doesn’t earn too much by working at a garage and it can theoretically be because he is too lazy. It says in the text that Lucy had longed to give her mother something very precious and beautiful. For that reason she wants to surprise her by selling some flowers and giving her the earned money. She doesn’t think about the consequences. In my opinion the reason why she doesn’t do that could be her love for her family. The mother is very possessive as she always thinks about the future and what they can live on. The money her husband comes with

It was 1813, Lucy Larcom's father had died and had to step up to take control and work in the mill. She most likely had a reason to step up, possibly the oldest or one of the middle children that wasn’t married yet. She earned 1 dollar a week and was ready for college but she couldn’t go because her family needed her and her money to help them survive. She was 12-13 years old and had a paying job much like the other girls whose fathers had passed away or couldn’t work for some reason. She could only go to school for 3 months during a break from working but she could not go to highschool because her family had no money. Even though society is saying bad things about them but they looked up to them for their independence and their strength. Women…

She was an interesting character because of how happy she stayed during hard times. For example, after her mother’s death Lucy returned to her normal self; singing songs and being cheerful (pg 136). This proves that she managed to stay positive even when she was crying on the inside. Especially after her father lost all hope, she still stayed happy and strong. What’s more,”Lucy and Gloria Jean held each other close as they sat transfixed in front of the radio, listening to the news” (pg 177). However, Lucy did not hate the Japanese because of the incident. She still loved Miss Kanagawa as much as before. Finally, Lucy had such a strong determination to stay happy, that not even a war could make her hate someone.…

When Lucy first began working for Lewis and Mariah, Lewis tried to get her to behave more like his wife. During dinner one evening he passed comments in attempt to make Lucy smile and laugh. “I didn’t laugh, though, and Lewis looked at me, concern on his face” (Kincaid 14). During this period of time, the 1960s, women were expected to be “seen not heard.” Lucy finds that concept ridiculous. She displays these feelings again during her first encounter with Paul. “The voice of the girl my mother…

I’ve been told the impact of a parent’s passing can carry on for years or forever. I was my mother’s primary care giver for two years. In her last four months, along with hospice, I took care of her full time along with maintaining my full time job. She passed in her home surrounded by me and my other two siblings in January. Just three months later my dad, who was not married to my mom, died unexpectedly in his sleep. I am still in the tender times of grief from my mother’s and father’s deaths. Who would think I could fathom writing about such a sorrowful time in addition to writing about the lessons I learned from my mother’s last months and the graceful way she left this earth. I relive this not only because it is kind of…

In the novel Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid, I identified concepts that are still being used in modern society. For instance, when she is discussing about her father's death and the roles her mother would take on around the house to help. It is interesting that today we still follow the ideals of women and their role in a marriage as if it was the 1990’s, although we have slowly been trying to break the chain there has not been progress. However, I found the way she handled the death of her father and the response to her mother was rude by saying how she will never return back home. Her mother needed comfort the least she could have done was gone for a short period of time, then move on with her life but not lose communication with her mother. Nevertheless,…

Lucy is caught between two worlds: the old traditions with her family and the popular social life with her school friends. She behaves well, makes homework and does whatever her mom tells her to do. I think this is also why Lucy wants to be friends with Bethan. She doesn’t want to be the ‘good-girl’ stereotype that she thinks she is. Her mum definitely has a clear vision of what perfect is to her and she wants her daughter to be just that; perfect. Even though Lucy’s mother puts a lot on Lucy’s shoulders, Lucy still wants to make her mother proud. She still wants her to think of her as the good girl that she is. For example she wears makeup to school but takes it of before she gets home so her mother doesn’t see it. The relationship between Lucy and Bethan is very simple, yet complicated. Indeed, it is very hard to understand. The two girls might seem like real friends, but in reality I don’t think they are even friends at all. Bethan is everything that Lucy wants to be and also the complete opposite of her. Bethan is free and can do whatever she wants with her life, because nobody expects anything from her. Bethan is probably lonely in despite of her popularity. I think that she might be very controlling, therefore hard to be friends with. It seems like she uses Lucy because she is an easy target. Lucy will do almost anything Bethan says, therefore Bethan feels powerful when they are together. I think their relationship is unhealthy for both parts, but in a way I…

Towards the back of a closet, in the corner where the dust tends to linger and the light shies away, hangs a brown suede leather jacket right next to a pair of old jeans. A jacket that--in its newer days, when the zipper still worked and both pockets were hole-less--a young woman wore on occasion. But, both the jeans and jacket are a bit faded now, the threads have turned awry, and the zippers have lost their shine. The woman has now passed it down to her daughter, but her daughter never wears it.…
