and memories good and bad will decide whether you want to go again or not.
During Joel’s procedure to get his memory erased of Clementine, he realizes that there were more good memories then bad.
Stan and Patrick, the technicians of Lacuna Inc., show up to Joel’s apartment to begin the procedure. As the procedure goes on, Joel begins to realize he does not want the procedure anymore. Joel realizes he is still in love with Clementine. One good memory Joel has is they are on the cracked frozen ice of the Charles River. Joel and Clementine are lying on the ice when Joel says; “I could die right now Clem, I’m just happy.” Another good memory he has is when they were in bed together; Clementine asks Joel if she is ugly. Joel and Clementine then share an intimate moment and Joel repeatedly says you are pretty. Clementine tells Joel to never leave her. The good memories throughout the procedure reminded Joel of the happiness Clementine brought him. He tries to escape by hiding in different memories that Clementine is not in. Joel retreats to his childhood memories to save Clementine from being erased altogether. Joel has “gone off the map.” Not only has Joel gone off the map, he tries to wake up causing his eyes to open but not be alert. Joel cannot move or speak, even though his eyes opened. Joel is desperately trying not to forget
Clementine.
Clementine, after she had her memory erased, immediately got into a relationship with Patrick, and began to have these deja vu moments. Clementine has these moments because Patrick stole all of Joel’s stuff that reminded him of her. Patrick thinks Clementine is this beautiful and intriguing person, wanting to pursue a relationship with her. Clementine senses something was not right. Patrick gave Clementine this necklace to make her feel better, however, Joel was supposed to give it her for Valentine’s Day. Clementine was happy because she had never got jewelry before that she actually liked. At the end of the scene, however, Clementine finds the gift hard to believe, to perfect. Clementine then takes Patrick to her favorite place, the Charles River where she has taken Joel before. Joel had created a journal of this memory that Patrick now has. While Patrick and Clementine are lying on the ice, Patrick says the same words Joel did in his journal: “I could die right now Clem, I’m just happy.” Patrick’s expectations of her feelings for him were wrong. Clementine reacted completely opposite of what he intended. She gets upset and leaves Charles River, and has no idea why. Clementine feels empty inside and confused. Clementine was in love with Joel, not the things he gave her or the places he took her, which is where Patrick went wrong. Patrick should of told Clementine the reason why she felt empty. The reason that would of made her realize she still loved Joel. Joel would fulfill the emptiness Clementine was feeling.
Mary, the receptionists, and Doctor Mierzwiak were together before Mary had the procedure done to her to forget the affair they had. However, even after the procedure, Mary was still smitten by Doctor Mierzwiak although she no longer remembered the affair. Mary wanted to “move on” as she stated in her tape. Although Mary moved onto Stan, she still had a deep
