The poem ‘Out of time’ vividly initiates the essence of life and humanity as being primarily dominated and controlled by Time. Many critical analysis of Slessor’s work convey that his perception of time is that of a mystery, something that cannot be clearly defined and comprehended. His personal connection with time is deluded with the fact that it can be both a destructive force and a pleasure found in a moment. The adamant and unstoppable nature of time; causes it to solely control and thus highlight the vulnerability of the human existence. As observed in the first sonnet the destructive nature of time is…

The second line of the text refers to flowers being picked during the day. The action of taking flowers out of their roots has a figurative connotation, because their is a separation between the flower and it’s roots, but their is no need to take out the flowers, it's an action without a purpose. Flower picking can serve as allusion to the life of Li Young-Lee because as he waits and time passes, he is left with no parental roots to guide him, and each moment that passes is each moment the flower is being taken out of the ground. Furthermore the syntactical absence of commas allow the free verse structure of the poem to be illustrated because although the words are structured in the poem, there is no structure for how the poem can be interpreted. So the poem can be a reference to childhood, or a reference to a loss of time. In this case, the stanza refers to Lee touching and reflecting upon his father's past which are apart of the book, and although this is true he is also losing time by reflecting and by picking the flowers. Although this all takes place in the past the present implications are that time is lost in Lee’s childhood because he spends time reflecting on the…

Love is a theme that is a favorite of Garry Marshall, this is evident throughout many of his films. He likes to use this theme in combination with the genre romance-comedy to entertain the audience and convey his message in a lighthearted, humorous manor. Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” portrays many themes that still are relevant to this day. One topic emphasized in the novel is the perception of love and how love is viewed from one person to another. However, there are really two different types of love which can be seen back during the novel’s time of the early 20th century all the way to today which is passionate and companionate love. Passionate love would be what the main character, Janie Crawford is seeking in her life while companionate love is what society wants for Janie. The difference between the two types of love sets up the whole plot and conflict and plays as one of the most important themes of the…

“Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For some they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That’s the life of men.” (pg. 1) Janie’s journey is seen through her grandmother and her three marriages, her solely purposes of finding her dreams of the true meaning of love. 500 Days of Summer

It is thought that in the film “500 Days of Summer”, a 2009 comedy drama with a truly original romantic twist, post-modernism serves to enhance the overall message of the movie that is, don’t fall in love with love. The postmodern elements such as the distorted use of time, the fact that the film does not follow the tradition “Hollywood” love story, and finally the evident presence of role reversal throughout the story, all help to convey this idea. In the movie, the distorted use of time plays a major part and is able to better the viewer’s understanding of the story by the fact that it allows viewers to see both Tom and Summer’s relationships in stages, it helps capture the highs and lows along with the humor and desperation as the relationship moves along. The film also follows a much more unorthodox version of a love story than the traditional love stories in western culture, with a boy-meets-girl narrative, yet with a not-so-happy ending. Finally, role reversal is a significant component in “500 Days of Summer”, enhancing the overall message. In Tom’s case, viewers see that he is a hopeless romantic so desperate to find “the one” that he simply ignores all of the signs telling him Summer is not the one for him. This is a quite original twist to modern western culture as typically the women are the ones trying to find “the special someone”, rather than the men.…

These themes are significant to society because many people can relate to them through experience. The theme of love is extremely important in Emma and Rick’s search for identity. This is because it helps change their mindsets and their career. The symbolism of hope is a clear indication that in the end love will prevail and there is hope for future generations. This message is what Toby’s socialist views originally reflected when he states, ‘I realised the dream of peace, love and understanding was over long ago’, demonstrating his loss of hope for the future of society. In the opinions of Rick and Emma this isn’t the case, instead there is still hope for future generations, shown through their message for Toby at the end of the play. This is also displayed through the title of the play Let the Sunshine which is also the name of a 1960’s pop culture song symbolising peace and love. The depiction of themes by David Williamson has made the play contemporary and significant to audiences…
