• What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

Discrimination is when a person is harassed or treated differently, because of race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender among many other reasons. In employment circumstances discrimination is something that an employer does that hurts an employee; for example an employee being fired for reasons not related to on the job behavior, or not selecting him/her for a promotion. Discrimination is different from Prejudice and Stereotypes, because its not being negative towards a whole entire group. Discrimination denies someone an opportunity to improve their life.

• What are the causes of discrimination?

Since our readings focused more on discrimination in the workplace, I decided to describe some of the common causes of disconcertion in the work environment. One of the causes is a hostile work environment, if an employee is the subject to constant harassment, or not being included in activities based on factors such as race, or religion. Also salary employers are barred from paying employees differently for the same type of work based on any prohibited factors. Refusal to promote is another common cause if the employee who would otherwise be given a promotion is refused because of factors such as race, or disability that employee may be able to file a law suite. Discrimination in the workplace is very common, and there are times when someone is looked over, because some race or gender, and these things are not fair every employee should be treated fairly.

Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for any other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping in the sense that it is the act of excluding groups to privileges based on prejudice and stereotypes. Prejudice refers to the negative judgments or thoughts about a group or individual. They are formed without thought or knowledge and are often passed down through the family. Stereotyping is a negative generalization about a group. For example all black people are thugs or priests are child molesters.…

According to Schaefer, discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination occurs due to prejudice, which is a negative attitude toward an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority. Stereotypes are unreliable generalizations about all members of a group that do not take individual differences into account. Discrimination is an act of denying individuals their rights due to another’s prejudice which is typically caused by stereotypes. While stereotypes and prejudice are negative attitudes and preconceived ideas of groups, discrimination is the resulting action due to them.…

    - Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. (Racial and Ethics Chapter 3) The difference between the three words is that prejudice is negative comments about a group of people without having any knowledge about them. When you think of stereotyping it is more of you having some type of input on how one person has acted before and now you think that everyone that is somewhat similar will do the same as him or her. Now you have discrimination, which you deny individuals certain rights, because of what has gone on in the years before and you still base that lifestyle on what they should be limited to do.…
