What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for any other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping in the sense that it is the act of excluding groups to privileges based on prejudice and stereotypes. Prejudice refers to the negative judgments or thoughts about a group or individual. They are formed without thought or knowledge and are often passed down through the family. Stereotyping is a negative generalization about a group. For example all black people are thugs or priests are child molesters.
What are the causes of discrimination?
Causes of discrimination vary. They can be caused due to race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or a disability. Discrimination can lead to hate crimes as seen in the KKK. They feel that their race is superior to all others; they turn most of their anger toward blacks. However there are times where another race other than blacks is targeted. The violence from the hate crimes often leads to death of innocent bystanders. Hate crimes are often a dominant group member acting out toward a member of a minority group that has little or no power.
How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they different?
