Ethical Dilemma
A major health problem that is affecting millions of children around the globe is child maltreatment (ANA, 2015). Child maltreatment is any act of harm or threat to a child under the age of eighteen by a parent, caregiver, or guardian (ANA, 2015). There are four common types of abuse; physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect (CDC, 2015). There are many forms of neglect such as physical and emotional neglect. We all have to assure the safety, health, and care of all our patients, and to provide them with comfort. The (ANA) Code of Ethics states that “The nurse has authority, accountability, and responsibility for nursing practice; makes decisions; and takes action consistent with the obligation to promote health and to provide optimal care (ANA, 2015).” A nurse has to be able to make decisions that they think is best for their patient. These principles relate to my dilemma because I had a patient with shaking baby syndrome and his mother was violently shaking, him at only a few months old, which resulted him being diagnosed with non-accidental trauma with subdural hematomas. Because of this he has a seizure disorder and a tracheostomy with ventilator dependence. This can relate in so many ways with kids who have been abused. Kids who have suffered terrible things in their life can lead to long-term problems. Irreversible brain damage can be caused in just a few moments that will last their entire life. Can you imagine those poor kids having to go through such terrible times? It is not right for anyone to have to go through such trauma of being abused and neglected. Sometimes parents think that it is okay to discipline their kids by hitting them. That can lead to even more hitting and abuse, which can affect the child’s mentality and developmental levels. There are other ways to discipline you child by explaining to them what they did wrong, or having a time-out session calculated by one-minute times their age. These are very useful ways to discipline a child, but abusing your child should not be an option. In some cultures, it may seem okay to abuse your child, but all around the world there are millions of children who have suffered from abuse and some even lead to
