1.4 Ethical dilemmas and conflicts faced by the care workers in health and social setting
Dilemma is a situation when an individual faced difficult to make a choice in between two or more alternatives. In care homes, regarding patient’s care in daily basis care staff faces major ethical dilemmas. Without satisfactory result, ethical dilemmas can be defined as problem (Bainbridge & Ricketts, 2003). One ethical dilemma could be related to engaging in a programme and the risk of harm when there is noise in the environment. The service users might enjoy the activity but may not enjoy the noise in the environment which may agitate them and experience confiscation. In this situation it is the responsibility of caring staff to ensure engaging the service users in such a programme that they intend to take part and ensure enough measures in place to minimize possible risks. Here the procedures may be assessing the best possible time when service users will truly enjoy the programme. Offering them no choice other than the programme already set could be considered as hampering their who can communicate effectively freedom of choice.
In case the confiscation occurs the caring staff accompanying the service users should be enough experienced in giving medication to calm them down. The caring staff is encouraged to carry a fully charged mobile phone to make call for help if there is any emergency. The situation may go beyond control which is not expected though. New legislations are significant in practice as obsolete and back dated process have to be swept away, otherwise that will deter the improved practices (Skills for Care, 2012). It is basically required for the protection of public and is the responsibility of regulators to constantly review the policies and procedures as and where required. It is not that easy to introduce a policy. Rather the process is monotonous. However, it includes identification of needs, accumulation of required information, drafting in the documents, consultation to confirm accuracy and reviewing. It is the responsibility of Government to regularly assessing the activities, duties and external factors in the environment to ascertain the changes and timely incorporation of those changes in proper place (Skills for Care, 2011).
