Introduction
Today, long work hours have become a significant issue. For employees’ health and the normal operation of the society system, ethical issue of long work hours should be cared more. Countless evidence shows that long work hours increase the workers’ risks for injury and disease. For instance, a research by American government estimates that long work hours increase the possibilities for injuries by 61%. Also, long work hours can easily cause some diseases such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and over fatigue (Dembe et al., 2005). The diverse effects related to long work hours are also associated with the social stability. Some employees are illegally forced to overtime work by the unethical work schedules of companies. Employees are the foundation of social operation. Thus, the dangers associated with long work hours that endanger laborers might negatively impact on the social stability as well (Dembe, 2008). Even though some workers may voluntarily work additional hours motivated by the potential to obtain a higher salary, they cannot be responsible for their family at the same time. Families are also the basics of the society. If families are incomplete, how does the society healthily develop? Consequently, long work hours negatively influence the health of employees, and it may also disturb the function well of the society system as well, so the ethical issue of long work hours should be resolved.

Historical situation of long work hours
Negative effects about the ethical issue of long work hours have been paid attention since 19th century. Among ethical experts in 1820, the Industrial Revolution first caused a discussion about harsh working conditions and long work hours (Atack & Bateman, 1991). For the health and welfare, employees exert strike against business owners for higher pay and better job security.

    One example of disruption of biological rhythms is due to shift work and shift lag. This disrupts your sleeping pattern because it means you are required to be alert at night, so need to sleep during the day. This reverses and disrupts your circadian rhythm, becoming desynchronised where it is no longer entrained by EZ’s. There are many consequences of desynchronisation such as sleep deprivation. Shift workers find it hard to sleep during the day because of the EZ’s such as light and sound disturbances that keep you awake. This means shift workers find it even more difficult to stay awake at night time because they have had a poor quality daytime sleep. This then affects their alertness. Night workers often experience a circadian ‘trough’ of decreased alertness during their shifts. For example Boivin found that cortisol levels are at their lowest between 12 and 4am, which is the primetime a night worker, would be working. This means they have low alertness and decreases the efficiency of their job. There are also many effects on health due to shift work. A significant relationship has been found between shift work and organ disease. For example, Knutsson found that people who worked shift work for more than 15 years were likely to develop heart disease than a non-shift worker. This may be due to the direct effect of desynchronisation in the circadian rhythm.…

    If an employee is working nights, it is important that they get the correct amount of sleep after a shift in order for their body to function properly. Sleep depravation is a major health hazard and also can cause employees to become a health and safety risk. An example of this in the aviation industry is security officers not searching a passenger properly because they are too tired or sleep deprived to focus and perform their job properly this person may have explosives in their shoes with the intent to blow up an aircraft.
