When a major incident occurs in the aviation industry this has to be reported to the right person, authority, organisation and health and safety procedures must be followed. If there was a serious air crash this would be reported to the AAIB, CAA and the HSE. All of these organisations would document all factors of their investigation and put in place key factors and procedures to follow to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

Information has to be kept confidential and once a case is closed the information about the individual who reported their concerns is destroyed or returned to them. Chirp is not an anonymous scheme/ organisation it is a confidential. This is because information received in an anonymous report cannot always be validated. Employees and anyone in the industry can raise concerns without fear of being identified however due to the fact that it isn’t an anonymous service this may put people off from reporting their concerns in fear of being identified.

If an employee is working nights, it is important that they get the correct amount of sleep after a shift in order for their body to function properly. Sleep depravation is a major health hazard and also can cause employees to become a health and safety risk. An example of this in the aviation industry is security officers not searching a passenger properly because they are too tired or sleep deprived to focus and perform their job properly this person may have explosives in their shoes with the intent to blow up an aircraft. If the security officer was not fatigued, then this would normally be detected instantly however because they are fatigued they may become very relaxed and lazy with security checks on passengers meaning that suspicious or dangerous items may make it through to airside. This a major health and safety risk which is why it is important that supervisor understand the effects of fatigue and how it affects a person’s alertness and work ethic.
