Ethical issues in organizations
Assignment on this ethical issue assignment is very important and critical as all the companies or organizations do have some ethical dilemmas or ethical issues. Before I begin to write more on this topic, I would like to define what exactly the ethic means whether it is in corporate world or in everyday personal life. According to the Webster’s collegiate dictionary, “ethics is the discipline dealing with what is good and bad, and with moral duty and obligations. It also defines ethics as theory or system of moral principles or values governing an individual or group or a guiding philosophy”.
According to Maniam and Teetz, unethical behavior has played a large role in the business failure over the few years. Chief Executive Officers and Chief Financial Officers are being charged with crimes and pleading guilty to these crimes on a daily basis. In business world the motivation for cheating is financial gain. This motivates the people to display this greed, deceitful and unethical conduct which eventually causes them and organizational problems. One of the example illustrated in this article is that the people within the organization have a responsibility to conduct a business in such a way that optimistically benefits the employees as well as the stakeholders who indirectly have an interests in the company. A recent example is the executives from Enron Company only sought to enrich themselves without any concern for the employees and stakeholders. There are also other companies where the top executive officers have found themselves in trouble for illegal and unethical behavior.
Sometime a person’s decision also depends on that particular person’s situation. This happens because ethics is a broad and murky area and the workplace is always full of ethical dilemmas and issues. Sometime employees feeling the pressure to perform may resort to unethical
