Ethical Issues in Social Research
Why is inflicting no harm to participants an important ethical issue when performing social research?
Describe the importance of no harm to participants as an ethical issue.
Give examples to illustrate the difficulties with this issue.

Examples from the book that had difficulties with ethics include the Milgram experiment, the Stanford Prison experiment, and the syphilis experiment. These experiments were done in the name of science but had a lasting impact on the participants.

In the listed examples, the institutions that sponsored these experiments were not looking to harm the participants, they were simply trying to understand the social world around them; however, in every situation in life, work, extracurricular activities, etc., a cost and benefits analysis must be conducted. Inflicting harm to participants can alter their perception of the world around them. It can cause momentary and possibly lasting psychological or physical ailments. After the experiment, the participant should feel the same psychologically and physically, just as they felt coming into the experiment, there should be no negative altering of their bodies and minds. Boundaries are set up, such as the Belmont Report, Office for Protection from Research Risks in the National Institutes of Health, etc., to protect, minimize harm, analyzing cost and benefits of research in this field. This is done to protect participants from negative effects from research. I also believe rules, regulations, and boundaries have to be set up regarding this issue due to the principle of legality. If harm is afflicted either psychologically or physically or both to the participants it will inevitably effect the results, the experiment may not even be carried out to completion. This causes wasted time, energy, thought, and money on an experiment that could be used on an ethical experiment to further the understanding of science. The researchers knowingly withheld treatment from the men, meaning that the risk to the patients was actually greater if the men participated than if they didn’t.     It can be argued that ethical issues need to be considered because they may cause psychological harm, for example in Milgrams study, his participants actually thought they were inflicting pain on people and that the researcher didn’t care that the person who the participants thought they were electrocuting with painful electrocutes were getting hurt badly. This caused distress to the participants which could have a long term affect in them. However to make this situations more ethical the researchers could debrief the participants once the study is over and tell them that it was not real.     These guidelines made any further replications of the experiment impossible, which proves how damaging the experiment truly was. The emotional scarring this experiment had on the participants was severe, leaving them to wonder whether they were evil people themselves.     Ethics can be defined as a “set of moral principles and beliefs that govern a person’s behaviour or the conducting of an activity” with its main principle of doing ‘good’ and preventing harm (Oxford Dictionaries: 2011). However Orb et al (2002:93) states that Ethical issues can best be described or expressed as the “tension between the aims of research to make generalizations for the good of others, and the rights of participants to maintain privacy.” Ethical issues and moral dilemmas are seen to arise in almost any type of research concerning human participants; in quantitative, biomedical, psychological, anthropological and sociological research. The infringement of some ethical issues which arise are considered to be more serious than others; however in order to minimise these ethical dilemmas, researchers must follow and obey a strict set of ethical guidelines in order to protect and minimise harm caused to participants or research subjects. Urie Bronfenbrenner suggests that there is no way of conducting research without breaching the principles of professional ethics, and that the only way of avoiding such dilemmas is to cease the conduct of any research (Fine 1993:267). Clearly there a variety of differing ethical dilemmas which occur in research, however those which arise in ethnographic research are in complete contrast to those ethical dilemmas raised in biomedical or quantitative research, where some might suggest that ethical problems are greater (Alder et al 1986). Punch (1994) goes further in suggesting that qualitative studies such as ethnography rarely, if ever, raise ethical issues (Orb 2000:93); however this statement is heavily debated. This essay aspires to discuss and analyse the ethical issues which arise in ethnography and discuss how valid and harmful these issues really are.
