Ethical Issues In The Truman Show
The movie, The Truman Show, tells the story of a man named Truman (played by Jim Carrey) who lives his entire life in the set of a reality TV show that is cast to the entire world. The very popular hit contains his life from birth to present day and shows his genuine reaction to every day struggles and celebrations. His life is captured by over 5,000 cameras in a pretend world. The entire world just stands by to watch this 24-7 broadcast of Truman’s life. In the eyes of some, (mainly the producer, director, some viewers and payed cast members) there is no harm in doing this, and they continue to support the social experiment. However in the eyes of others it is viewed as cruel, negative, and unethical. This social experiment would never pass in today’s society.

He was no offered counseling or explanations of any sort as to what happened in his life. To do a study such as this one and not offer the obvious psychological help that he needed is wrong. He was hurt by the death and re-occurrence of his presumed dead father, and Truman was under harsh psychological stress when he noticed that the people in his own reality appeared to be watching him. If I were present throughout this time, I believe that Truman should have been given the opportunity to go through counseling if he wanted to. However please note that the experiment/reality show should have never gotten to the point that it was at.
There are several other things in this movie that break the ethical code. Truman was videoed and recorded without his knowledge, he was put through fake friendships, careers, love relationships, education, and much more. He was controlled by fake weather.     The Truman Show and Fahrenheit 451 are very similar in that the main characters deal with many similar conflicts. One conflict that is similar is that lives are controlled. Truman’s life is the utmost controlled. His “creator”, Christof controls what happens to him at any given moment. Christof also controls what the people who watch think and see. He makes them believe that Truman wants this lifestyle and could have gotten out of this life if he wanted to, which is not true. In Fahrenheit 451, the government controls what everyone thinks, does, watches, learns, and more. People in their society aren’t supposed to think or read.     In “The Distorting Mirror of Reality TV” written by Sarah Coleman, says that the producers have a distorting mirror to us as viewers. All producers distort all stereotypes and want the viewers to know what life is really like because of human diversity. Reality TV according to Coleman is viewed as “One man for themselves” and she says this well when she writes “ By eliminating one contestant each week, the show offers us a symbolic form of public execution.”(pg208)This is distorting because it shows once again human diversity. After all its not us that is being eliminated so it does not really matter who gets eliminated because we are still able to see the show and this is what keeps the viewers watching the reality shows, which offers us the symbolic form of public execution. On the contrary is the mirror of reality TV showing us the viewers what real life is about because of what reality TV shows people in society. The producers of Reality TV shows society that anyone will do anything for money and fame no matter how ugly and nasty they have to be to get it, they are determined to do whatever it takes. Coleman says this best when she says “Not are the shows’ producers the only cynics in this game.     The term fake love in itself does not make that much sense. How can someone express love, which is feeling that provides unconditional caring and commitment, and then call it fake. The only real way to have fake love for someone is to not love at all, but just to think you love. In the movie The Truman Show there are many individuals whom exhibit an illusion of love for the main character, Truman. At the beginning of the movie many of the characters appear to have genuine love for Truman. However, as the movie progresses almost all of the people whom are close to Truman, show in one way or another how they only think they love him. The best examples of these types of characters are his wife, his best friend, and his creator. His own wife, someone whom should be completely faithful and truthful with him lies to him on a daily basis. Her fake love is most clear when she crosses that line between actress and a real person. When she is acting she is trying her best to portray a woman whom truly loves him, but after seeing her act for so long even Truman can see her real personality underneath. He spots a person whom in real life cannot even stand him, but she puts a vale on to cover that. She probably really would like to love him but she cannot change the person she is any more than Truman can. Truman's best friend has the same fake love traits as his wife. Even though they were friends from children they always had a secret between them. He had the illusion of loving Truman probably just because he had known him so long. Though, once you've lied to a person over and over the love is gone. He lied so many times that by the end of the film it could be seen that even at Truman's worst moment he could lie to him to keep his job and the show going on.
