1. The most ethical decision is if she turns left into town and report the accident to the police. Even if she turns herself in and jeopardizes to lose her school-funding grant, she knows she did the right thing and her conscious is clean. She caused a fatal accident that killed the other driver, which means she must report to the police. If she doesn’t, then her friend should turn her in and help her for the long run. Human moral and ethical values are more important then the award for the school grant and reputation in the company. In the Deckop Chapter article-“Theoretical Bases for Analyzing the Ethics of a Decision”, it compares the utilitarianism and universalism theories. It states that utilitarianism is regarding “the greatest good for the greatest number and the ends justify the means”. It’s not ethical to disregard the law and serve the greater good. If she was killed in a deadly car accident, I’m sure she would want someone to report her death to the police who would later notify her loved ones. Running away from an accident is not only unethical, but is also a crime and there is no justification for it. The consequences of fleeing a crime scene is more severe than turning yourself in. “The pressures of a situation may cause one to apply self-serving biases that while in the short-run appear acceptable, in the long-run result in damage to one’s firm, career or self in terms of staying true to ethical principals and human morals”(Desktop, 2008). I strongly agree with this statement. If she won’t report to the police, and deny what she did, she would be living with her guilt knowing she knew what was the right thing to do, but she made the wrong decision. By knowing she is responsible for someone’s life and didn’t notify anybody, in the long run, it will destroy her emotionally (guilt, depression or even suicide).…
The ethical perspectives that influenced my decision making was Being Attentive: Collect the facts and notice what's being said. Being Intelligent: Find the underlying issue and determine who's really involved. Being Reasonable: Use the lenses to consider what is good, what is true, what is fair, and what is virtuous. Being Responsible: Make an ethical choice based on your analysis. Being Reflective: Defend your choice with careful thought and observe the aftermath closely. The way these ethical perspectives influenced my decisions was through personal and community values. Trying to understand and asses the situations, while also being fair and unbiased, so that all can feel addressed and handled in the…
A great deal of ethical thinking can be summarized by following 4 kinds of ethical reasons:…
1. The first one is the most powerful lesson learned from practicing ethical conduct during Boisjoly’s 27-year engineering career in the aerospace industry, is that them, as individuals, become the result-ant sum of each ethical confrontational event as experienced from the beginning of their careers.…
A 19 year old college student and addicted gambler was pulled over for erratic driving on the Long Island Expressway. He pulled out a toy pistol and pointed it at the officer, he was then shot and killed. Another incident involving a 45 year old cancer patient had the same ending in new Jersey. He walked into a Pizza Shop and pointed a gun at the officers inside eating. Experts believe that they force the cops to kill them as a form of suicide. Suicide is difficult to commit and forcing an officer to kill you takes away the pressure of completing the task. Some insurance companies don’t cover suicide and religions forbid it so it is away of taking the guilt and shame away from common suicide. 10% of fatal police shootings are brought on by people seeking to die.…
Rationalism was a way of thinking that completely changed the ways of the eighteenth century. This period became known as the Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Reason. Out of this era came the spiritual view of Deism and the intellectual framework American and French Revolutions. The document that officially separated America from Britain was the Deceleration of independence, which was heavily influenced by the concepts of the Enlightenment and Rationalism. Through the analysis of the Deceleration of independence, one can conclude that America was shaped by the Rationalist ideas of Philosophe John Locke, Deism, and the writings of Thomas Paine.…
An ethical dilemma exists when the right thing to do is not clear or when members of the health care team cannot agree on the right thing to do (Potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall, 2011). S.Z. is a 65-year-old Hispanic man who was admitted to the hospital for the third time in 6 months, for hyperglycemia. He is now scheduled to be discharged but his daughter pleads with the nurse that she does not want her father discharged because he is non-complaint with his medications and diet at home. She says she has small children at home and can’t be responsible for him, too. She is worried sick that he is doing this on purpose because he has been so depressed since her mother, who did everything for him, passed away. She says that her father has been seeing a curanderos, who treats him with traditional methods and that he refuses to take his medicine and only follows what the curanderos tells him to do. She does not agree with this and confides that she hopes to find a way to prevent her father from seeing this person and wants to know if the nurse can have her father’s discharge canceled and to ask the doctor to admit him to a nursing home where they can ensure he eats right and takes his medicine and not the herbs he has been using. Then she pleads, “Please just tell the doctor he won’t take his medicine.” Many years ago he was diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus Type II and has been on insulin for two years. His blood sugar on admission was 589. He is retired and was widowed one year ago. He’s active in his church, gardens, and likes to work on small projects around the house. His medical history includes Diabetes Mellitus Type II, insulin dependent, Hyperlipidemia, and Osteoarthritis.…

According to the ANA, euthanasia is the act of helping to end the suffering of an individual by assisting in their suicide wishes. ("Code for nurses," 1985) This has been a topic of great debate for quite some time as certain individuals see this as inhumane and that no person has the right to determine when or how they die. Dr. Jack Kevorkian, also known as Dr. Death, assisted several individuals with suicide, which eventually landed him in prison. Is it ethical to want to help one end their suffering at their own request? Should we dictate this for a terminal cancer patient that has gone several rounds with chemotherapy and no success or a person that has multiple sclerosis and no chance of regaining the same function they had at one time in their lives?…

The pros of occupational licensing are that it protects the public from incompetent providers. Licenses prove to the public that the provider has had the education and/or training. This does not always mean the provider is going to perform a good job. It also promotes higher income for the licensee.…
The basis for the conclusion reached, methods of evaluation, and reasoning, requires ethical guidelines and ethical individuals conducting evaluations of programs. According to Dr. Paul and Dr. Elder ethical reasoning abilities are important for numerous reasons. Dr. Paul and Dr. Elder explain how the majority of individuals “confuse ethics with behavior, in accordance with social conventions, religious beliefs, and the law instead of seeing ethics as a domain unto itself, a set of concepts and principles that guide us in determining what behavior helps or harms sentient creatures” (Paul & Elder, 2003). Another definition of ethics given by…
For my independent research project, I chose to watch the movie entitled The Departed. Centered on the Boston mob/drug lord scene and the Massachusetts State Police effort to put an end to it, The Departed is about as unethical as it gets. Frank Costello, the leader of the mob, starts off the movie with a rare ethical act as he buys a young boy, Colin Sullivan, some food for him and his grandmother and gives him a little spare change. One could say that he is sharing his wealth by giving to the less fortunate people of the city, an act in which John Paul II would applaud. From this point on, Costello continues to mentor the boy and be a fatherly figure to him, all the way until Sullivan graduates the state police academy and works himself to the head of the Special Investigations Unit of the Massachusetts State Police. Sullivan is now a mole on the inside for Costello and in a very high position of authority, practically ensuring that all of the efforts the police task force puts into capturing Costello will be wasted. That is, however, until the heads of the Massachusetts State Police, Quanum and Dingman, put rookie cop Billy Costigan into an undercover operation as well. Costigan does some fake time in jail, makes his way back into the public, and eventually becomes one of Costello’s men. And if these two double-crossing men weren’t unethical enough, add in the fact that Sullivan’s girlfriend is a shrink that sees Costigan as one of her patients and ends up sleeping with him, and The Departed covers all sides of double lives that one can imagine.…
