Healthy Food Equals Healthy Happy Students What is your take about schools serving the students high calories, high fat, and low nutrition meal? When we drop off our children at school, we are under the impression that they are in good hands and receiving a good education. Nevertheless, are the schools negatively affecting the development of the students with unhealthy processed meals? Prepackaged, frozen meals, high in calories, and low in nutrition such as cheeseburgers, pizza, and chicken nuggets are some of the meals our children are eating nine months out of the year. In my child’s school menu, “Taconada” is served on three separate times this month. My child could not describe it nor does she like it. Nutritional deficiency in school meals has affected students’ academic performance, health, and emotional development; this problem can be solved by implementing a school garden and a mandatory nutrition education.
Problem The nutritional deficiency meals that the school has been giving our students have had a negative impact on their academic performance. Some have debated that the educational curriculum is a result of students having poor academic performance. They reported that the educational system failed the students and resulted in their poor performance. In the contrary, a students’ attention, alertness and retention which effects their academic performance is greatly affected by the meals that the students consume. A study conducted by Florence to examine the effects of diet quality on academic performance and their “findings demonstrated an independent association between overall diet quality and academic performance.” (Florence, 2009, Discussion section, para. 1) A student that is not malnourished will have the physical and mental ability to excel in any given environment or qualities of education compare to a student whose attention, alertness and cognitive process
